Finally an easy solution to bryopsis!

I posted a few weeks ago when I used a gallon on my 120 in a month. 90% went away but some returned. I am now on my second bottle of tech M and have not seen any new growth but a wee bit of the old stuff is still there. I agree that it seems the extra ingredient in Tech M is what does it so I figure I will continue to dose for the next 2-3 months and order another gallon if need be. I was adding 1 full serving cup per day to my 120. Now I am dialing back to 1/4-1/2 serving cup.

Now I am fighting GHA!!! Sheesh does it ever stop!!!???
 
No -- it never stops! That's the thing -- there is always something! You cannot really be successful in this hobby and be lazy! I just want to get rid of the bryopsis so I hope I have the luck of you and mfinn!
 
Ok, so I just set up my tank, put in a bottle of IO bio spira to help cycle my tank and I went out of town for 1 week and came back to a complete HA infestion. I scraped the glass and have gone lights out for 4 days now. I also added Chaeto and Caulpera to the fuge, there are only 3 nass snails in the tank.
What do you suggest best to remove HA?
 
First be sure it's normal hair algae and not bryopsis. Dig around online, bryopsis is pretty easy to ID once you know what you're looking for.


For hair algae, definitely keep low nitrate and phosphate, and employ good HA grazers like turbo snails, trochus, and tuxedo urchins. These are the best I've ever used.

But.


Since this is a new tank, expect to have hair algae come and go for a while. Not uncommon at all for a tank to have an "algae cycle" that it goes through.


Just keep those nutrients low. Nitrates under 5ppm and phosphate as close to 0.03ppm as you can get it.
 
+1 on snails and urchins.

You can also try a tang, preferable a vlamingi or unicorn, as they are great grazers and if you ever get bubble algae they eat that too.

I've also had success with a magnificent foxface.

Hermit crabs work great too!

If I were you I would get rid of the caulurpa. If it goes sexual yu wil end up with a milky tank for a day or so and then your display tank will be covered with this algae.
 
Just a thought.... . If the success with tech-m is the secret ingredient and not the mag, then why doesn't Kent just bottle the secret ingredient and save us the trouble of dosing mag for no reason?
 
do I have bryopsis? I originally thought it was hair algae and just got finished with my 9th dose of Algeafix marine and it did nothing!!! Mine doesn't have a feathery appearance. It only grows in the nooks and crannies in clumps that are a dark green. It pulls off pretty easy though. will a dollabella sea hare eat this? Thanks..

I've been dosing Kent tech M for 3 days and there is a dramatic difference and I'm hoping the tech m is helping.
here is what steps I've done (to begin with my tank was covered rocks and glass in bryopsis)
no lights at all going on 8 days
scrape as much off glass as possible with credit card
added 3 turbo snails and 5 nass. snails
added tech m to level of about 1500 ppm

Keep in mind I have the luxury of having no livestock in this tank (other than snails) but I do have over 80 pounds of LR

The bryopsis is dying off and being picked up in the skimmer. I feel hopeful that this will work. Not sure which technique I'm using is working best but it seems that a combined effort of all of them are really helping.

I'm affraid to see what will happen once I turn my lights back on.
 
I Just spent about $100 trying to kill this stuff. As soon as I did a H2O change it was back within 3 days.

This time I will dose until I see some recession then start testing. Test kits are $$$$$$$$
 
what is the sailfert test like? The red sea test is a little complicated but it works, just a little tough to figure out.

It took me a lot of tech m to get my levels to 1500ppm
 
Anyone try Coral Rx? 10-15 minute baths then a fresh saltwater bath and then back in the tank...clearly only going to work with rocks or corals that are able to be removed from the system...can be done every 2-3 days

it is on the coral rx web site under filamentous algae

Will Tech-M "Expert Series" Work?

I picked up some Kent Marine Tech-M but it says "Expert Series" and the bottle is a different color - do you think there is really a difference and will it work to kill off bryopsis?
 
I use d the tech m for 2 weeks and a non-lighting 2 weeks in combination and it all but wiped out my bryopsis. Not sure if the was the major factor but I will be using it regularly for now on. For the price and the results you cant beat it.
