haha - no get first then figure out next - that one isnt a file fish - i have a file fish and it is reef safe - kind of odd that you would say that - he will stay in my nano anyways - i cant research every fish in the ocean - if you didnt know there are alot of them - think before you post please - not to be mean, but there always seems to be one person out there to complain about what you do about everything - its not like i am going to a fish store and picking them out - we had a great time

ignorance like this still exists in our hobby?

I think lifesworks point is it is very hard to determine what some of the florida species are while your actually out there doing it. For example, does anyone know what a code goby looks like when hes out there looking for stuff? It's not because of ignorance, its because of lack of information of some of Florida's own saltwater Species.

The fish obviously looks like a filefish at first sight, but after seeing him swimming around next to a filefish it is noticeable he is not.

Taking things you dont know what they are and letting them die because you decide you dont want them would be ignorant, but that isnt what he did. He took one fish he didnt know what it was, has kept it alive in a qt tank, and has succesfully been feeding it. If it turns out to be not reef safe, he will return it to where he got it from.

thanks cowboys wife :-D for the sand and the post about the other - please stop posting on here about us doing bad or wrong - we care for fish and we do what we can - please - ill start another post just so anyone who wants to complain can do so there- thanks

i was going to empty this guys 90 for him- still waiting to hear back from him - dont you guys have to fill that 55 too? - man i cant wait to go - probably would be good to split up the days - but i am always tired on mondays when we go do the stuff on sundays - so either way if fine with me - probably would be good to do all the stuff on saturday - ahhaha - now thats funny

Well said Sytanek and Lifeswork. We arent doing anything wrong. Its not like we are keeping the fish that we bring home in a bucket without light and food. The fish have a better chance of dying in the water where they came from than in our QTs. If its a species that we cant keep, they go back to their native waters where they can have the risk of eaten by a larger fish. ;)

iam hoping to get a yellow tang - two fire fish - and a pair of clowns today from this lady around the corner from me - crossing my fingers - all for 60.00 then i will have all the fish i want - :-D well except for ... just kidding

Oh wow! Let us know if you get them, because if you do, I want to come see them! I have a thing for tangs and firefish. I want a pair of purple firefish, and that would bring me up to my fishie limit for my tank that is growing smaller by the day :)

i will let you know - i cant wait - she is like "ill call you back at 10 and let you know whats going on" iam like noooooo let me come get them now pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee hahahaha of course i didnt say that, but i soooo wanted too - haha - i feel like a little kid in a candy store - i guys we should ignore all the people that post about us doing wrong - i just hate how it messes up such a nice thread - i wish rc would just delete there posts

I hate to be a party-pooper, but I completely agree. If you don't know what it is, how to care for it, how to feed it, if you can even put it in your tank, why not just leave it, go home and research, and if it actually is something you want, go back next time and get it. The ocean is a big place and that is not the last time you will see the animal. Why not just make sure you want it before you take it out of its home, throw it in a bucket, bring it to Orlando, put it in a tank, find out you don't want it, bring it back to the ocean in another bucket. This is all stress on an animal and god-forbid the animal picks up some disease from another locale and then spreads it back into the Atlantic ocean.

You not only can create serious problems for your tanks and for the fish in question, but you can actually start an epidemic in our oceans, not your oceans. Just remember that this hobby lives only because we desire to respect our oceans. I don't think taking an animal without knowing what it is is any type of respect. You can take this as rude, raining on your parade, etc. But seriously, think of our oceans before you think of yourself. I again am not singling anyone out, not saying don't collect, not saying don't have fun. Just have some respect while you do so. If you don't know what something is, leave it.

Say what you want, I personally think that this is irresponsible at the very least. We are blessed to be in this location, we are given priveledges by our government to go out and collect, and we are in a hobby that should be concerned with our oceans. Bring a Florida wildlife or sealife book with you. Bring some flash cards of what is normal to live there. Bring a FL conservation book. Bring something that can tell you on the spot that it is something you want to bring home. There are many ways to solve this issue without bringing an animal that will never be beneficial in any way(not saying this specific example, but it could and has happened many times in the past) and will never be put in your system back to your home just to see.

goodness - i thought we stopped this - i wish i could delete the whole thread - what a waste - thanks for your 2 cents - but nobody wanted it - how about all the power plants dumping there water into the ocean or ect ect ect - please stop posting - send me pms telling me what a bad boy i am - that would be fine - just stop messing up ......... ah forget it

I'm pretty sure of this was a case of wow I got a filefish, then got home and realized hey its not a filefish, I wonder what it is.

Trust me there are lots of things we put back because we did not know what they were.

you guys remember that weird thing I found when we were at sebastian? It was cool as heck looking. But we all decided since nobody knew even close to what it was, to put it back.

I know that with some care grab first research later is okay in some areas- Like, if it looks like a goby, smells like a goby, tastes like a goby its probably a goby and they typically all have similar care which is great...

However I hope if you can't identify something you keep in it QT and if you decide not to keep it in your tanks you carefully acclimate it back where you found it. Not to mention the undue stress for transport etc..

What do you plan to do when those horeshoe crabs get full size, for example?

On the outing I'm planning on Sat I'm not going to tell anyone what to do - as long as they follow FL collection rules that is their business, but I think some forethought is important.

There are a lot of "with caution" reef safe animals out there. Are you sure your filefish is 100% reef safe, or he just hasn't eaten anything important yet?

I am not trying to mean this as an attack, but honest legitimate questions. I was hoping a local person here could be slightly more respectful to an LFS employee whom I personally know cares very very much about this hobby and all animals and really only wants the best for the critters out there.

BTW, that fish did look like a filefish, dont know if it smelled like one, that would be kind of weird...lol

dont know about the taste like part too.....

just in the end it wasnt a filefish.

I think this whole thread has gone crazy for no reason....

And according to live aquaria, the fish is very peaceful with the exception of inverts, hey who needs those anyways? Theyre way overrated. J/k

Well if thats the case, then Ill think twice about buying a fish from a LFS. Where do you think they get their fish? All fish, except aguacultured I suppose, come from the ocean. Down with the companies that go diving and take fish from their homes! If it was so horrible, then this hobby would cease to exist. And Im pretty darn sure that there are no diseases in our QTs that will wreak havoc in the entire Atlantic Ocean. Get a grip, seriously. Having said that, Im with Lifeswork and Sytanek. If you guys have a huge fat problem with what we do, then PM us and tell us to go to time out.
