finally our scavenging adventure pics!

wow- i went to work and came back and found my post went CRAZY! lol-wish it was for something more positive.

I agree with everyones input for the most part- i dont think it was us being ignorant but everyone has their own opinions i hope that this doesnt make people think differently about us becuase a week ago when everyone was posting pictures of the stuff they caught no one said anything.

the horse shoes are being taken to fellow friends who have large tanks-we arents out to hurt or destroy the ocean-all this arguing is completely unnessessary.

I was just trying to share some pictures that people were requesting and wanted some input from other reefers- if i knew it was going to cause such an uproar i wouldnt have done it.

despite this mess-im still looking forward to meeting everyone at the meeting! and to our future adventures

have a good day everyone! :D

Just getting in on the discussion. I think the photos were great! Although the comment about needing a tan was right on, lol. I think alot of us can't believe it when we really catch something 'cool' looking, and if we have a quarantine, hey, we can always bring it back if we HAVE to. I have been one of those irresponsible people myself, and paid the price for it. I brought a fish home, he looked fine, did my research, but SOMEHOW he brought flukes to my tank without being discovered for about a month. So my days of puting ANYTHING out of the ocean that I CAUGHT won't happen again. I think those of you that do this are alot braver than I will be again. As for CSCH. (I'll abbreviate, lol) I think you gave alot of enviromental points that needed to be displayed in this thread, although none of us like it when we don't get 100% positive comments, it still needed to be seen, for people like me, who aren't aware of the laws and restrictions. Hey, someone could have been reading this thread and decided since everyone else was catching stuff for their tanks, they should too, and would go out not knowing anything about possible laws and restrictions on what they may have caught, and god forbid, got caught by F&W in the process. So I thank you for providing that info to the "not so educated" rest of us! This thread got a little rocky there for awhile, but I think EVERYTHING posted is information that was needed by SOMEONE. That is how we all learn, and what this place is for. Thanks again for all the photos, experiences, and wildlife info, we can only become more intelligent with it!
:D :D

Ok, I wasnt going to get involved, but I cant help myself.....
I seriously doubt this is the first group of people who have gone out and collected thing for their tanks. With that said, when you make a post saying that you disagree with the practice of collecting and keep on and keep on about how its wrong and la la la, I doubt its going to change anything except people are going to do it, but keep it hush hush and not share their experiences, good or bad. No one asked for anyones opinion and when an opinion was given and the poster asked to PLEASE PM him rather than post, people just kept going and going. Why not start a thread about how bad collecting is, rather than hijack someone elses thread. We all come on here to gather information, but when we brow beat someone for doing something we dont agree with, no one else gets the information, because people just shut down. Sometimes you just gotta let it go!

I think you missed the point. Noone ever said they were wrong for collecting anything from the ocean. In all the posts throughout this whole thread, quote one where it says they were wrong for collecting or going out to get their stuff from the ocean. I really son't think that was the issue at all. Again, no offense meant whatsoever. I just truely don't believe there was ever an issue of collecting being bad. Maybe I should reread these posts, but I've read them all a few times before and cannot recall anyone ever even implying this.

No, I think you made your point very clear. I'll leave it alone, but I just want to be clear. If you come onto this site posting about something that you have done, people will comment. It is a forum, not a blog.

That is why we are here. To share experiences, comment on other's experiences, and continue a discussion, in this case, about ethical and knowledgable treatment of native FL marine life. I don't think it is far off the topic, since the question of what kind of animal was collected had already been proposed.

I don't understand when people come here giving their point of view and then try to tell others that his/her point of view should be the last one. I'll be done after this, but sometimes threads need to have both a protagonist and antagonist. We don't need to take it to a personal level, we don't need to be harsh or relentless about our views, but I do think they need to be shared. Granted, in forum setting, many times we cannot get our point across in the manner we hoped it would be.

The reason I asked the above was because I honestly thought you might be confused on what the issue was. Again, I meant no disrespect or offense, I just wanted to make sure you understood the debate in the first place.

Lastly, I really was not going to post anything on this thread, even though I did feel that was an issue that needed to be pointed out. But then I see someone mention the other opinion(my opinion, too) and get berrated for it. This is the only reason I even entered the conversation, to back up a friend who I felt was completely in the right. Even if I didn't think she was correct for saying what she did, I think that she had every right to say how she felt, regardless of how I feel about the comment or the person its/their self. Now, if I felt she was wrong, I would mention so, but I would not say:

"i cant research every fish in the ocean - if you didnt know there are alot of them - think before you post please - not to be mean, but there always seems to be one person out there to complain about what you do about everything "

OMG< i didnt even see the last pic, i cant believe that you caught horseshoe crabs, that is totally awesome, i have always thought those are soooo cool, but they get too big for me to have one, right?

Well, I am not an expert at their life by far. According to several websites they reach maturity around 10-12 yrs of age, and that is not when they reach their largest size. I am not however recommending you get one, since I am not a professional on this subject.

I dont believe I posted an opinion one way or another. I was not debating anyones view on this subject, just the way some people persist on getting their opinion across when it wasnt even asked for, than continuing to stress it in an open forum when asked to take it to PM status. I dont think anyone was getting attacked and needed back up on this thread. People will not post if they continue to get scolded, and I dont really blame them. Than what are we learning?
I wanted to see the pictures and read about their day, but when someone just keeps scolding them and telling them that they are irresponsible, they wont post anything about it.
So what did we all learn here? Dont post anything because if people dont agree with your post, they will not only let you know their opinion about it, they will never let you forget it either.

If everyone here had the same opinion, this place would blow.
I like the fact that someone will always disagree with someone else. It makes some things interesting.
In this case, most everyone is getting off topic and taking things personally.
DON"T!
This post should be a place for people that don't know about collecting wildlife to learn from the experienced. For people to sit down and read, and say, WOW I didn't know that. Not ,WOW I didn't know trying to say something or ask a question was going to get me jumped.
We should try to use this as a learning forum.
If you have criticizim, please try and make it be constructive. Most people respond better to that.
Now if you want to jump me, come on. If not, thanks.
This is just my opinion, and that is all it is.

Marcye made a very important post,

Please do keep in mind that collecting is a great deal of fun and I don't believe anyone is taking exception with that. But nationwide, campaigns are being launched to educate people about the potential problems associated with returning wildlife from tanks back into the wild. Even creatures collected from local waters, once introduced into a tank with non-native species, are exposed to diseases and parasites often not found in the local waters in which they were collected. Rereleasing these creatures back into local waters after being exposed to non-native species can also release disease and parasites our local fish have no immunity to or that there is no local control for in the wild. Please don't take this as "bashing" but instead as a forum to educate and share opinions and knowledge.

The coast of California and the Mediterranean sea have been compromised by the introduction of exotic species. Guess who got blamed for both of those introductions of exotic species ? As aquarists we're held to a higher standard.

ANYWAYS when I caught some with my friend he tolod me that they were not reef safe. sorry If i miss informed you. but the id was right, so your welcome.

PLaya, we are having a hard time with the ID. The liveaquaria site doesnt show Jade Filefish are local to Florida. But If I would have took a picture of the fish, you would have swore that is what it was, Including the Jade eyes. It looked way different than the common planehead filefish.

I guess whether they are reef safe, depends on what you consider reef safe to be. They can potentially eat inverts. But hey so does our goby and i cant get him to stop. haha

Agu, I agree Marcye's post was very useful. If all the post would have been as professional as hers, I dont think there would have been an issue to begin with.
