Dork Fish

My lfs ordered kole tangs but got in two of these. Im 99.9% sure we got the ID right but i could be wrong. The fish is much lighter in person. Anyone have any experience with one or even seen one? Information is sparse. No clue what cost of one would normal be but Im happy with my $45 investment lol.

Your identification will depend upon collection location; however, your fish can either be A. grammoptilus or most likely A. xanthopertus (more commonly imported).
This particular group of Acanthurus sp. tangs get very, very large.
They also generally have the tendency to become quite boisterous...

Either way - nice tang & enjoy your purchase....

Kind regards.

Those are the two i had it narrowed down to but mine has the tight pin stripes of the grammoptilus. Don't know if they both have it as a juvenile though. Either way its beautiful. I have a 150 gal so if/when it outgrow it Im sure ill find a buyer. Thanks for the input.

Can't tell for sure from the picture angle but it looks like a Ctenochaetus flavicuda or white tail bristle tooth. With the yellow pectoral fins and white tail I think this is more than likely what your fish store got in. They are very, very similar to kole tangs and are commonly sold miss labeled

If anyone has this months addition of the coral magazine featuring tangs you can see the similarities between the two tangs

It does look like Ctenochaetus flavicuda from the photo but he is definitely an acanthurus. I've been trying to get a better photo but he is very shy. This is the only decent pic I've been able to get. The light horizontal stripes on his body don't show up but the lines in his fins do. Thanks guys for the interest and expertise.

+1 on the Acanthurus xanthopterus. These are the largest in the Acanthurus genus, watch out! Liveaquaria lists them at 2'3"
