firefish jumped through 1/2" eggcrate

I have a small strip of eggcrate in the back to accomodate the return line and cables for the powerheads. The rest is securely covered. Firefish jumps through the small portion of eggcrate. I saw it happen infront of me and picked him up from the carpet and put him back in the tank. He was out of the tank no more than 6 seconds. He looked bad and went into hiding. Didn't see him today. I think he's a goner. Feels bad man.

Sorry, but as snorvich mentioned it is no surprise. Slender fish are like little torpedoes.....


Hopefully he is just in hiding and will take some time to recover.

+2...IMO, netting also looks better and allows more light into tank
BUT...don't give up hope for the firefish, yet...still a good chance for recovery!

At least you didn't take him out of the tank...I was breaking up rock on my bathroom floor this weekend and my pair of purple firefish were still in the rock. Scooped them up into the bucket w/ water I had next to me and put them back in the tank. They were still pretty freaked out the next day (especially since their home was gone too, now) but they are back to normal it seems.

i had a juvenile blue tang jump out of my tank through some eggcrate. Found it in the morning on the carpet, have no idea how it fit though the eggcrate. I use netting now

Yes, firefish are prolific jumpers. At least 1/4 inch holes have a chance with most fish. Egg crate is useless.

Odds are, that the tang hit the eggcrate with enough force to lift it...I've had wrasses 'lift' my 2'X3' aluminum rimmed netting, and then 'cook' under the lights

Yeah I agree, and mine was a weird one, especially since they both did it in the same night, like one went and the other didn't want to be w/out em!LOL
I'm a big fan of the 1/4" bird netting, that seems best.

It's easy enough to cover the egg crate with 1/4" or 1/8" screen using zip ties. This will prevent future jumps if you decide to get another dartfish.

DIY window screen frames are very easy to make and look SOOOOO much better than eggcrate, & without the light blockage!

Yeah, that's what I've done, but for a quick fix, this would be cool, and it probably would make even smaller spaces, might have kept my helfrichi's in.
Eggcrate has two sides, if faced right the light loss would be very minimal.
