Great first pics! I just picked up a D40 a week ago as well.....what settings seem to work best for you?

I was told by a photographer friend that i should always shot in RAW(M mode) I used white balance in auto, no flash, iso was set at 200, aperture 5.7 &, f 11. they are the settings i used in all photos i posted... i think. Im still very new.

RAW and "M mode" are two completely different things. I just want to state that since you seemed to state that (M mode) is what RAW means.

I agree that RAW and M mode give the greatest freedom and highest artistic advantage, but ONLY if you thoroughly...I man COMPLETELY understand exactly what is going on. If you can't predict exactly what the various settings are going to do before you select them, M mode can't do anything but hurt you.

I should have stated that when I wrote the reply. Raw and m are different... Raw meaning file type. It took me about 50 shots to get the correct settings that worked for me. Well I should say as well as I know they worked for me.

If you are going to use "M" effectively you should be taking no more than 2 practice shot before the settings are right on the money. Taking 1 practice shot even should be rare. You should stick to Av/Tv until you get a grasp for what the settings actually do.

HI, how do you change the aperture and what is f 11? thanks

There is a "shutter" picture right next to your mode adjustment, located on a circular button.

Hold down on that, while in the menu. And roll the wheel just in front of it. You roll it left, the number goes down F5, F4.5, F2.5 (etc). Roll it right, it goes up. F8, F9, F11 (etc).

The manual has a better description. I can't remember what page off the top of my head.
