First time diving + certification

thats my worry :D

I'm Indian (dot, not feather), so am used to hot weather....

OK, OK that got glazed over, but u got me laughing, Echo Bills sentiments on getting everything done in one shot while you are stateside. enjoy your vacation time. you're going to get an earful from the misses no matter what.

I've never done cold water diving, and dont plan to anytime soon BUT diving is about facing adversarial situations and having the ability to work through them calmly. Aside from this, any time you spend in the water is 100% invaluable to contributing to your diving experience. Enjoy the hobby, it will open up another level to how you think about this (reef-keeping) hobby.

good luck!

Glad you are getting into diving, It is an awesome hobby that will heighten your appreciation for the ocean's beauty!

OW cert in Maine 30 years ago BRRRRRR........
Cold water diving is cool(literally) but man nothing beats warm water diving in shorts and a tshirt. Course i gots some built in thermal insulation around my belly but hey.....lol

Well, I got certified! Had my OW dive this past weekend at Monterey (Break Water). Surprisingly, it did not feel cold. Water was 50*. but we had 2 wetsuits on + hood + gloves.

It felt good. We did 3 fun dives in addition to the 1 skill dive. Visibility was poor, about 5-10 feet i believe. And swimming in the kelp was not fun! Triggered most of my anxiety. Other than that, it was fun. We had a harper seal play with us for a good 10 minutes. Lots of starfish (as expected of Monterey), octopus, nudibranch.

Can't wait to dive in Kauai next month. hopefully a lot more clearer and thus peaceful :D

Brr...50!

Congrats to you, yet another $$$ hobby :)

I'm complaining about 78 degrees in Bali, having to wear a wetsuit.

Have fun in Hawaii

break water (San Carlos beach? ) the visibility is poor. Other places in Monterey (point lobos I think) has much better visibility.

Congrats!

I'm really surprised they let you go near the kelp on your OW dives. We went close to, but not into, it and I found the whole idea kind of scary.

You'll have a great time on kauai.

I had one assistant, myself, and one other student. He did take us thru the kelp but was calm. Yeah, it was freaky. So he grabbed my hand and guided me to feel comfortable.

But I'm glad I did. Got to have a seal play with us for 10 minutes. Now I look forward to Kauai and clearer water. Hopefully more fun and relaxing :)

PADI is def the best scuba group - I did my OW with them and am doing my AdvancedOW next month. As 14 year old my family were pretty concerned about me going in the North Sea (UK) in a drysuit but now they're cool with it. My instructors are awesome and I'm going diving abroad with my dad next year now. There are lots of other organisations but I'm doing very well with PADI.
Love to all divers - you've made the right choice. :) :) :)

Im not sure about PADI being the best. I used to dive a lot with British Sub Aqua Club in Africa. They provide very in depth training.

I've got certs from both PADI and NAUI, also have friends with certs from other agencies like SDI etc. Quite frankly the instructor is more important than the specific agency.

I also have NAUI and PADI. BSAC, having a very different structure was much more in depth.
