fish breeding something in the air

well last week my clowns which i have had for over 2 years decided to lay eggs.

they did so again on tuesday, they didnt like the rock i put where they layed the eggs last time so the layed right next to it this time lol.

looks like wed night i will be trying to get the babies

and strangely my bangaiis decided to breed in the same tank last night, so the male has a mouth full

then to top that all off i have a ten gallon plummed for cheato with anothe pair of bangaiis int it and sure enough the male is holdint in that tank as well..

looks like i have some busy times ahead of me.

now i am going to build a mini breeding set up in my living room,, we will see how that turns out lol..

strange how they all decided to breed around the same time..

any thoughts tips or comments?

Happened to me last year. Both pairs clowns,bangaii quit after being moved to breeder systems.

What are you doing different in regards to feeding your aquarium?

Have you been feeding your tank more than usual?

Increased feedings will cause fish to spawn more (or for the first time).


My advice... Pick up a copy of Wittenrich's The Complete Illustrated Breeder's Guide to Marine Aquarium Fishes and/or Wilkerson's Clownfishes. If you haven't read them, I would definitely suggest them both. If you're ever in the Rochester area, you're more than welcome to borrow Wittenrich's book from me. I think my dog ate Clownfishes though.

My second bit of advice would be to find a good online forum dedicated to breeding fish. RC has great reef and fish advice, but the breeding content is mediocre at best. Head over to MBIsite.org or marinebreeder.org

Good Luck !I have a pair of Oscellaris and a pair of Cinnamon Clowns laying eggs every month for the last 8 years. I just don't have all the phyto plankton cultures and rotifer cultures to even attempt it.

I actually have been feeding the tank less over the past couple of months, i was fighting off alot of gha, so i cut my feedings down.

The only extra food the pair of cardinals in the display got was the clown babies when they hatched the first time.

for some reason or another your breeding fishes have been eating better lately.

Perhaps you lost some other fish that was eating foods? Perhaps you changed up what foods were being fed. The spawning is diet related.

i will keep that in mind, i think i am gonna start feeding heavy to keep them at it now lol

Could be several factors. Temp, feeding, photo period ,etc . Pretty common to have a bunch of clown's from the same area spawn on the same day. Matt's book is really good. I still have Joyce's book for sale. Hundreds of baby steps to be more successful. She has an impossible amount information on clowns. Each step is broken down w photos. The troubleshooting guides are impressive. Lmk my friend's office is near Arc, he could bring it to buffalo if interested.

the only thing i can come up with that is different is, i have turned off my central a/c but i did that because it has been so cool in my house i havent needed it, i wonder if that has had any effect my tank temp hasn't changed at all tho, as i have fans on the sump and my heaters are all double controlled with controllers.. maybe the fresh air from having the windows open has help trigger them.

Maybe the fresh air caused a jump in pH and kick started them into spawning? Keep with the feedings and they will keep spawning.

so far both cardinal pairs still are holding eggs, i am thinking about stripping them to prevent them from eating them tho. when i feed the tanks the males with eggs seem to want to eat, i am afraid they will spit or eat the eggs if i keep feeding the tanks.

clown eggs are still there and looking good as well.
