Second one looks like a croaker. First one is not a pinfish, but I've seen them. Cant remember the name at the moment, LOL!

First one is a juvenile mojarra, second is a sheepshead minnow (species of killie).

I will concede to Bill's greater knowledge but the name I was thinking of was silver jenny.....

No need to concede, Silver Jenny is a mojarra ;)

The other possible mojarra is a the spotfin. However, they look very simular and nearly impossible to tell apart as juveniles. With a fuzzy picture I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to Silver Jenny or Spotfin Mojarra.

thanks for the replies guys! bill you hit it right on the head! looks like the mojarra's will have to go back sooner than later i read they get real big. the sheepshead can stick around, apparently they can be found in both fresh and salt water. what i didnt read was if theyre reef safe, would you happen to know bill?
also do you know of a good online resource to id these local fish? either way next time ill remember to take a clear picture in my hand for easier id

Yeah, the mojarra's get big. The Sheepshead pick at small critters, pods, worms and such. Reef safe, though not normally found on the reef. They will do quiet well on any assortment of food you through at them.

Florent's Guide to Tropical Reef Life is a fairly good online ID source. It's not exhaustive, only covering the most common stuff. Not much by way of good online ID guides for the less common or less interesting to the general public :( One of those things were a good old fashioned print field guide is still the best.

thanks again bill, unfortunately the mojarra's didnt make it, i had never seen it first hand but based on the pictures and reading i did, it seems they developed tail/fin rot, and from one day to the next they had no tails and couldnt swim :(
on the plus side the sheepshead is doing well and has been named Roomba, as he spends all his time vacuuming up everything and anything that is and may be food lol
