MANTISMAN
G'day all

Whilst typically a stomatopod (mantis shrimp) keeper I have recently begun plans on a separate tank that won't house any stomatopods...

Basically what I had in mind was a 'large' (unknown volume) display refugium (no coral just lots of different algaes) with the following fish (hopefully)...

X amount of Orange-Spotted Filefish.
X amount of Longhorn Boxfish.
X amount of Pipefish.
X amount of Seahorses.

My biggest concerns are the Seahorses & Longhorn Boxfish...

Comments please as to whether these species could co-exist in the same tank I am more then aware of the difficulty in maintaining them (which is part of my attraction to them).

Cheers
Kharn

P.S. I figured this post would be best in the pipefish & seahorse sub forum since it's the seahorses that I am most worried about in this kind of setup...

Syngnathids are best kept in species only tanks. Even mixing pipe fish and seahorses doesn't work out well very often.
Definitely not good to have boxfish or filefish with seahorses.
Please see tankmates guide, http://www.seahorse.org/library/articles/tankmates/tankmates.shtml
While some fish are listed as suitable, individuals can be problematic, just as some listed as NOT suitable may end up being OK.
However, every additional species added to the tank will lessen the chances of success of keeping seahorses due to their apparent lack of ability to handle pathogens they get exposed to from other fish that haven't been raised in the same breeding source.
There are some links at the BOTTOM of My Thoughts on Seahorse Keeping that lead to excellent information on seahorse keeping.
