No I really don't think a G4 with a single sedra 9000 is anywhere near strong enough. Even with the recirc mod. You will see a tremendously different outcome with a bigger skimmer. It will pull organics out quicker and you won't need to do WC as much. Its just my opinion/experience but ask folks on the large tank forum if they've seen a big difference between a mediocre skimmer and a bigger skimmer. Your tank is huge and your bioload is huge, I do believe you will be much happier (and so will your wet friends) when you upgrade. You actually have one of the smallest skimmers in relation to the size of your tank I've seen in quite a while.

If you need to keep costs down I'd suggest a really nice Beckett.

Bear in mind also I am feeding this skimmer via gravity feed from my 30" long overflow.. The sedra is basically just providing the airflow... Much like an overgrown beckett..

I really want butterflys too.. But.. If I want to keep any kind of mushrooms/polyps.. I've been told I can't have the flys ;(
-----------------------------------------

NOT true. You just have to be selective. I have a long nose butterfly and no issues with mushrooms and polyps. I want to get a copperband also in my next tank. I would be afraid that your tangs might harrass your butterfly. Say goodbye to feather dusters though. My feathers now inhabit the sump and overflows.

You really think so? It's a ASM G4X with the recirc mod.. The skimmer body itself is 36" tall... And is rated before the recirc mod @ 475 gallons with the recirc mod I've been told it will handle 600+ gallons..
--------------------------------------------

I really think so. Now, I have a 36" (total height) x 12" diameter with 3 recirculation Sedras 5000 (will upgrade pumps as new ER, Eheim or Dart NW pumps are available). Mine is also fed from the overflow. I just hope it will be enough for a 450 with 4-5 tangs, other fish and SPS.

Sand varies between 3-5 inches in places.. I would up the amount of LR and definatly use some Live sand if you can get it.
----------------------------------------------

I am going to use a lot of the live sand from my current tank. I know that many people said not to reuse sand but on this, I would like to swim against the current. I would just rinse the sand in old salt water and add it to my new tank. Works for me twice before....knock on wood.

I agree 100% that skimmer is too small for the tank and it doesn't draw in enough air. IMO you should have a skimmer that draws in 2000lph min.

I had a buddy with a 600g reef tank and he used on of those really tall turbofloaters and a very large becket just to keep up .

Also just because someone said it will handle a 600g doesn't mean it will . I am sure it will handle a 600g FOWLR but not a tank where corals and large fishloads are going to be kept together.

My er 8-2 and asm g-3 combined pull in more are combined than the g-6 and I still need more IMO. So now I pulled out those and I am using a skimmer that pulls near 1000lph. It alone in the last 3-4 days has pulled 4 times more gunk than the other 2 were doing together.

Trully if it was me I would look for a used RK2 or a large H&S or ER

Well, for now it's keeping up.. I'll definatly keep this information in mind tho.. I have a source for RK2's.. So I'll budget for one of those..

Everyone is doing well. After a bit of fighting for a day or two.. It's funny.. Everyone has their own personalities..

But all in all, the tank is doing quite well, and the 4 colonies of GSP I have in the tank are absolultely thriving :)

Although, the skimmer situation still needs work.. I'm working on adding a beckett injector to my ASM G4-X..

Anythign to get more air into it ;)
