Fishboy's Anemone/Clownfish Setup

Hello all,

Currently, I have a 20L with a RBTA and a pair of onxy/true perc (not mated yet). I'm brainstorming an idea that would allow me to have several pairs of clowns and an anemone dominated tank.

The top tank will be lit with (4) T5s. The two clownfish pair tanks will be lit with standard T8 lighting or possibly LED strips.

The sump would be sectionalized into three chambers. Filter sock on the drain with live rock in the first chamber, chaeto in the second chamber and skimmer and return pump in the third.

Im not completely sure how to plumb this setup. Any suggestions would be helpful.

nice idea, are you going to try breeding them?

i would make the return to the top tank, overflow to one 5g, overflow to the second 5g, and down to the sump.

what species are you going to keep? will the species tanks have anemones too? i think 5 g is a bit small for pairs of clowns, biotopes with anemones and anemone shrimp or similar would be a cool idea!

If you could make the stand a little deeper you could use 10g. tanks turned 90 degrees (looking at the short side) for the broodstock. I'd also move the middle shelf down some so you have better access to those broodstock tanks. Where will the offspring go?

I am making the assumption you are planing on starting a breeding project. I might be wrong!

That is an interesting idea-having a water fall type effect. I'm concerned about one of the lower tank drains clogging and then every tank overflowing.

I was not planning on keeping anemones in the species tanks because of lighting. I figured 5 gallon would be sufficient for percs. and osc. I would need something bigger for the other species.

That is a good idea though I liked the idea of having a little bit more viewing area with the tanks turned the way they are. I'm not sure about where to raise offspring. I figured that it would be a couple years before I have a pair old enough to mate anyways as I am not buying mated pairs.

you could put a second 20 gallon under the first instead of the 2 5s and put in a glasspanel-divider for overflow, hard to clog also, you would have the benefit of more volume and having to drill only one tank. this 20 could then have two drainpipes down to the sump.

thought about the clownspecies youre going to put into this setup?

Well, it seems that I may have three predrilled 10 gallon tanks lined up for this project. If this is indeed the case, it will add even more water volume and allow for larger specie of clown.

For species, I am currently thinking:

Top 20G: Pair of Allardi
3 TenG: Onyx/perc pair, black ocellaris pair, pink skunk pair or picasso pair(funding???)

very nice! i also like your selection of clowns, although im not a fan of picassos and would rather take skunks, also regarding the color - theyre simply different than the others.

That is a great point. Maybe I should take the skunks and then try to decide between the black ocellaris and picasso. I REALLY like picasso clowns. Swallowing the price tag though is a different story.
