Flame Angel Consensus

I hear many conflicting stories regarding Flame Angels. Model Citizen to picked at all all my corals to it'sa crap shoot. I see many tanks that have them and have read they need to be the last one "in the pool" for those that have put Flame Angels in a mixed reef what are some tips or tricks that you can provide and what experiences and warnings regarding the controversial "flame Angel".. Thanks for any tidbits

There are too many variables to reach a consensus. My going in assumption with dwarf angels is, given enough time and opportunity, they will all pick. If you get one, be prepared to lose fleshy polyped LPS, have reduced SPS poly extension, and problems keeping clams. Best advice is to feed them very well so they don't get into the habit of nipping. High flow and active tankmates can also help.

No reason that they have to be the last added, though precise advice depends on stocking choices.

Flame Angel Consensus

Search for "The Angelfish Thread to End All Angelfish Threads". Flames are right about 80% safe, although most of those pick at some point, most of the time without noticeable damage.

I have to agree with ca1ore. Mine didn't bother any corals for months, but then one day decided it liked the taste of my zoas. It destroyed an entire colony before I could get him out. Not worth the risk IMO.

Agree with above. My coral beauty is mostly safe, except for any type of brain, favia, or acan. Wont tough anything else, but no feeding will stop the picking at some point.

The last two Flame Angels I tried I kept in in a nano tank with a few corals. Trained them to eat all kinds of foods & fattened them up for 3 months. They didn't show any interest in a wide range of LPS & SPS corals. Thought this time I finally got lucky with a Flame. After a week in the 125 reef tank I started noticing poor polyp extensions on the corals and before too long the Flame was tasting and eating almost every type of coral I had, even a clam. I said never another Angel in that reef tank. Too much stress. Well I couldn't resist a year later I put two Regals in and they are both coral munching machines. Now I'm at the cross- road do I keep the corals or the fish. I have no luck keeping the two together. IMO Angels+ corals=STRESS

Thanks to all of you. I will cross Angels of my list of wants. I don't need anymore stress in my life. I very much appreciate the help you all have given!! Happy Reefing to you.

Dwarf Angeles are pretty hyper active and pick on everything to see if they like it. So sooner or later they will discover all the tasty things in the tank.

Larger angels are somewhat different story. I have 5 Regal Angels in 4 tanks. 3 of the tanks have zoas, 2 have LPS and all have at least some SPS.

My Sumatra Regal pair is in my predominantly SPS tank but it also has 2 Blastomussa colonies. The larger of the pair sometimes nips a little on one of the Blastomussas but without causing any visible damage. The one LPS they really liked was a Favia - that one didn't survive. SPS picking is rare and appears rather targeting bugs and pods on the corals than the coral itself. All my other Regals are pretty much the same in regards of SPS. All that is kind of in line with what most report.

The interesting thing is that they also seem to ignore zoas (at least the cheap ones I have).
I've seen some nipping, but there it seemed to rather targeting the zoa slime than the flesh. And this behavior usually only occured with sick individuals. I think what they were really after was the palytoxin as a form of self medication.

FWIW, my flame decided just this past week that my squamosa clam is deeelicious! Unfortunately I was away on business, so the clam is looking mighty stressed (to the point that it actually spawned).
