Flame Angels

Not sure on the flame back (never had one) but I understand they can be quite territorial despite their size.

I have a CB and flame together in a 90 cube and they get along fine. The flame was added about 2 years after the CB so the CB was chasing for a day or two but once the flame knew who's boss everything's been peaceful for almost a year now.

I started with a flame angel, she did great until I stupidly purschased a tomini tang...ick. Anywho, I now have a CB and she is the fattest hardiest little fish ever, eats like a piggy, tons of personality too. I still wish I had my flame angel. I may have to add one in a year or so.

I guess my point was that flames seem less hardy now than they used to be. Since I've changed my approach to acclimating fish I havent lost a single one - except flames, two of them. The first one was in my acclimation tank for about two weeks, was doing fine, and then developed a whitish haze to its scales, fins got ragged, and tho i began to treat, it died within two days. The second, bought from a LFS about 1 hour away was toast before it even came out of the bag; still not sure why. My third try was with a flame from a fellow reefers tank and that one is fine. About the only other problem I have had is with a newly acquired Purple Tang who developed ich in my intro tank; he is now in HT with cupramine, and seems on the road to recovery. Perhaps my experience with flames is just bad luck, but I certainly would no longer consider them to be an easy fish to acclimate and keep.

If you really want a flame buy from a trusted source. I suggest LA. That's where I purchased mine from and she was great for months until I got a tang :(
They quarantine all of the live stock before even offering for sale on the website. You may pay significantly more with the shipping costs added in, but its worth it for a healthy fish. Better to spend a bit extra upfront then continue to buy unhealthy specimens that die.

Diver's Den and the normal Liveaquaria website are very different things. Quarantine is a MUST no matter where you get your fish, but it's very important to know that Diver's Den quarantines and conditions fish, Liveaquaria does not.

+1... Live Aquaria ships direct from a Calif. wholesaler, that might even supply your LFS ! I do buy from them and I'm not knocking their product or service, just saying that 'same source' fish can be found elsewhere.

I believe that Divers Den QT, is more of a few week 'observation' period and not a full QT !

I thought for sure the cali locale quarantined as well as DD. I know my LFS will order from them sometimes too, small store and all. Acclimation is important so is quarantine, but it also helps to know that cyanide was probably not used in the collection of wild specimens. I don't believe LA or DD would sell fish caught that way, but I may be wrong.

To me Live aquaria is a great place to buy from due to their guarantee. I plan on getting my flame angel from them.

I get my stuff from my LFS. They have a 15 day guarantee as well and it's awesome!

Live aquaria is where I get info haha

I'm friends with the people at my LFS so they will order whatever I ask for so long as they can find it, so I most often purchase locally so I don't have to pay the shipping costs. My LFS ups the price by a few dollars which is nothing compared to 35$ over night shipping. And I usually watch it there for a few days to a week before I take it home. But LA is a great source of info and if you are making a larger order then the shipping is no biggie. Just depends on what your resources are and what you are willing to spend.
