Flame Hawk owners corner

Just picked this dude up a few days ago and he's been in my 10g quarantine. Been eating great, spectrum pellets and live brine.

He seems to be doing really well, no signs of parasites. Although he did have white stringy waste, that went away after day 1, I'm assuming it was just from stress.

Now from the people who own flame hawks, how many of you lost your shrimp due to the fish? I have 1 huge fire shrimp and a pair of small cleaners. I'm thinking he'll eat my cleaners, but I'm willing to risk it

And my fish seems to be doing something strange, he opens his mouth as big as possible and flares all his fins up, anyone else experience this? And he sometimes scrapes his head against the glass or rock.

I'm wondering if I should do a formalin dip or if I should just toss him in my DT after a couple weeks.

They are very hardy fish and only need qt for your other tank members as they rarely exhibit any signs of disease, even in tanks with parasites.
I dont qt my fish often unless they are expensive or wc clownfish any who.
Mine has eaten a couple of sexy shrimp and a HC but I cannot be 100% it was her.

ay way good luch a great hardy fish.

Have you ever heard of flame hawks attacking other fish?

I have a pair of small true perculas that I hope will not be hurt by this fish once I put him in.

I think that you're shrimp will be ok because they are established. It's a different story if the roles are reversed.

I had one for about two years, Shrimp and other inverts were fine as well. They are a great fish a with an amazing personality.

nice, thanks for the replies!

he looks healthy enough, I'm just going to fatten him up a bit and toss him in the display tank :)

by the way, what happened after you had him for 2 years? did he jump out?

mine dont bother anything. I have a pair in my cube, and they spend the day hopping aroudn on rocks and hanging out in the acro colonies

Ours has been one of our favorites since the day we got him. He always has a guilty look on his face, eats well and leaves everyone else alone. The way they perch at every angle makes 'em comical. Great fish, hope yours is as much fun as ours has been!

I lost a 4" cleaner shrimp to a 2" flame hawkfish. That being said, I still love the little guy...he's like having a small water-puppy. He even swims to the front of the tank to greet passers by (and look for food I'm sure).

The mouth opening and fin flaring thing seems to be completely normal AFAIK...mine does the same thing and has been for the last 6 years. :)

I have never had a Flame mess with any Ornamental shrimp.

I have had a long nose hawk also with great results never had any issues.

he is my fav since i have had him almost as long as i have been in which is just oevr 2 yrs now

I always gotta post these pics. Not sure what happened, but I think my trigger took this cleaner down and the hawk ate the head. Had the antennae sticking out of his mouth for almost 24hrs. Too funny.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Flame Hawk. Truly a great fish and great personality. Get ready to ask yourself often " Is this normal" Mine swims straight up and then falls to a perfect perch somewhere, sideways, upside down and some times does a full circle. I swear they are a puppy dog trapped in a fishes body. I don't have any ornamental shrimp with him but he has never messed with crabs and such. Can't be as sure about snails. I do give ghost shrimp as food. Love to watch him stalk them. He is going on 6 years old. Never have been sorry to have him. I have a Peppermint in my fuge instead.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread. I had a thread looking for a third fish that would be compatible with a Gold Banded Maroon Clown and a Neon Dottyback. Both 2 1/2" inches. I believe that the Flame Hawk will work. I was going to try a Chalk Bass, but this fish sounds much more interesting. I have very high flow and plenty of Live Rock and the Maroon never picks on the Dottyback, so I think this will work. Thanks for the great write up on this fish.

I've seen them go from $29-$50

I purchased this guy because he was the smallest I could find @ 1.5-1.75 inches.. usually they are around 2-2.5''

I saw a small cloud in one of his eyes so I did a freshwater r/o dip and guess what.. 3 flukes that I could see fell off of him within 4 minutes, also did a formalin bath which I don't think did much.. and now treating him with live brine enriched with prazipro.. gotta make sure he is completely parasite free before he goes in the display.. GREAT eater though :)

temperature matched r/o water for about 3-5 minutes

i like to follow up with novaqua or other stresscoat after any kind of dip as it stresses the fish out, 1/4 tsp stresscoat with some tank water in a bowl for a couple minutes
