Flames breeding....how to catch eggs!

Hello all...well I've done it (yeah right)....I've gotten a pair of flames to start breeding and she's finally releasing her eggs. The only problem (first of many I'm sure) is I have no idea how to capture the eggs before 1. fish eat them, and 2. they go into overflow.

Can anyone please post pics of drawings/sketches of what's worked for them?

Thanks, I've read all I need to read on these guys so please don't post links to "how to breed" sites. Not trying to be a know it all, far from it, but I'm really looking for something specific to help me catch the eggs...

Thanks a lot...

you'll have to setup some sort of egg harvester (egg trap) at the overflow box. The people that i know use the blue filter pad material on the inside of their overlflows so the tank water spilling over the overflow is filtered thru the pad and hence the eggs can be caught and harvested. Otherwise its more difficult inside the tank.

thanks frank...I was hoping you'd chime in....I'll try that and see if it works...I'm a little worried about damaging the eggs that way?

I do have some scrap rotifer screening around somwhere...I think that would work too...53micron should get them right?

yup 53uM, yes that will work,
However large pore stuff, like the blue filter pad will allow a higher water flow. Just make sure the 53uM stuff doesn't clog quickly

great tip....I thought of that after I posted....I want to catch as many as possible, but it's a mixed reef so the flow is kinda high...it'll be risky, we'll see what happens....I'll post a vid this evening

Thanks for your help...

Frank is right.A filter bag of 300mic tied to the outflow pipe works fine.Otherwise some people get pelagic eggs running a fine net across the surface, though I never tried that.

Nice job Matt! I assume that since you are trying to collect the eggs, you've isolated and can culture an appropriate strain of copepods? (Clausocalanus sp. or Oithona sp?) Very cool if you've acheived this! If not, keep us posted on any alternative methods that you have success with.

I discussed this in detail with Frank Baensch, his articles from 2002-2003 inspired me. If I lived closer to an ocean I would have already tried this too.

I wish you well with them, it's been a dream of mine...I'll be ecstatic and jealous if you succeed ;)

thanks Jason....yes Baensch's articles are plastered in my brain...sure wish we could just go out and "troll" for their first food! I have a friend that can get the right copepods, but I'm not even close to being ready for that yet. I know this is going to be a ton of work, so for now I'm just really happy they like each other and are diong the deed ya know!

It'll be a journey....hope I can get as much help as possible from all the pros on here!

thanks again and I'll update soon...

What you plan for a larval tank and rearing conditions once you have the eggs and food?
I didnÃ"šÃ‚´t see much info on that in FrankÃ"šÃ‚´s articles. In the german book thereÃ"šÃ‚´s a pic of a black drum shown as larval rearing tank, but looks like a broodstock tank, with all and egg collector.

Luis, thanks for asking....I've got a system in my garage for some stubborn clowns at the moment (clarkiis won't lay eggs). The water quality isn't that great and I know I'll have some major challenges, but it should work well enough for the flames IF I can get the babies down there. I have plenty of space/tanks in the garage, it'll just be a matter of trial and error to figure out what works and doesn't....I'll post some photos of that setup this weekend as well.

Any suggestions I'm wide open to advice, I've learned a lot from lurking on here with you, ediaz, rsman and others posts!

Thanks....

I have been googling without result the link where I did download those two articles in PDF form. Maybe somebody here knows the actual link to the old FAMA back issues website? More than probable it's down since ownership changed.

Can't upload the docs here, exceeds 100Kb by far. Mail me, I'll attach them.

sorry for the lack of updates....in the middle of exams right now, I'll let everyone know asap how things are going.

The flames are still breeding but I have not tried to catch the eggs yet.

I've been trying to help my friend raise akindynos to no avail so I figure why try on the harder flames if I can't even get the stinkin clowns down!
