flourescent lamp problem -please help!

Sorry this is a bit of a "newbie" question I haven't had this problem before.

I've been buying replacement PC bulbs (lamps) from internet. Maybe a bad idea but only good reef-savvy LFS is 1/2 hr drive with limited dry goods.

Now a replacement bulb (lamp) fritzes (lights red faintly, then won't light, seems greyish in color) when I plug it into my fixture. The old bulb (lamp) still works fine.

Is there agreement that this is a defective bulb? Or what should I try or what else would it be?

I agree that it's a bad bulb based on your description. If another works fine in the same spot that's enough evidence for me.

Second part of the question -- internet vendor policies?

Second part of the question -- internet vendor policies?

Thanks Barb. I feel it is defective but I'm trying to be fair. Here's what the vendor (great reputation around here ) said when I notified them of the same facts via email (see below). I'm a bit frustrated by it actually but haven't yet informed them, because I'm still trying to get some help from the experts out there to understand, what my expectations should be.

Basically they are asking me to return the $20 bulb (lamp) and they will decide if I get a refund or not. I have to package the bulb (lamp) which is a pain and am basically guaranteed to spend some money and time shipping it. Well now I'm spending more time but hopefully get some ideas from you all, what do you think? Are they being reasonable?

"Thank you for your recent email. I am more than happy to assist you.

I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. I set you up with an RMA so we can replace that bulb for you. Let me go over how the return process works. The most important part of the return process is the RMA(Return Merchandise Authorization)number. This number is given to you when you file a return. This way when we receive your package, we can tie it back to your account. Here is your RMA number [omitted]. As soon as we receive it, we will test it out and if defective, send you a replacement. If you have any further questions, please let me know and I would be more than happy to assist you. Take care!"

I bought something for 5 bux with 5 bux shipping. They shipped the wrong item. They wanted me to mail it back (at my expense) so they could send me the right one. Paypal sided with them.

I appreciate the perspective, I'm dealing with a reputable company here, but yeah its a $20 item and I'm sure it will cost to ship.

Is their policy in line with everybody elses? Can anybody recommend a company that has a better policy in this regard?

Most companies have excellent customer service and the company you are dealing with seems to be the same way. A few like dr. foster's and crutchfield's will pay for return shipping, but this is often incorporated into a higher original prices. I hear ya though I'm not sure if it is worth it for a $20 lamp, but it is nice to know the store is willing to work and communicate with you in a timely and helpful manner.
