Flow suggestions?

Ok I'm over it now! :furious: :uzi:I have a OM that keeps sticking and I think I am going to take it out of service for awhile.

Here are my options:

- Run my dart wide open with 4 outlets!
- Buy some used Vortechs - 2
- Buy a wavy sea or sea swirl.


What do you guys use and what would you suggest? Also let me know if you or someone you know has any of the above for sale.

I had a Dart on CL with an OM as well, and took the entire CL down (plumbing and all) and went with 2 Vortech MP40's. My tank is a 150 gal. 48x30x24in. On a 180 I'm not sure if 2 will be enough; someone else will need to chime in on that one. However, with the addition of the new eco smart driver you can get a basic MP40's considerably cheaper.

In my case I couldn't be happier unless I had just gone with the Vortechs to begin with. The only down side is that the Vortechs do have a hum depending on the speed. This wasn't a significant increase compared to the noise that the skimmer/return make. Additionally, if you have/upgrade to an Apex controller you then can control your flow wirelessly.

I had both the closed loop and sea swirls. I would have two returns direct and the other two through two sea swirls. You will not be disappointed with the sea swirls. When I had purchased mine, I did a lot of reading and found many people having issues with the wavy seas. This may have changed in the past couple of years.

Thanks guys for the assistance. Keep it coming! I'm still trying to decide. the CL with the dart is by far the cheapest option but im still not sure.

CL Dart would be the cheapest to start off right now. if you don't like it, switch to Vortech's.

I got rid of the closed loop and have a 6100 tunze and a wavebox.

Quick update! Well the OM is removed and the Dart is plumbed with 1.5" pipe splitting into two outlets! All I can say is wow. A TON of flow in that tank now and nothing to clog. While I was messing with the plumbing I decided to move my return to one side and add a penductor.

what direction is th flow moving? Do you have it high in the tank or low?

When I look at the polyps on my corals they are going back and forth. The outlets are about one inch from the surface.

Well....... the dart is not working for me. Not getting the type of flow that I want so now I am looking for controllable tunze's or vortech used. Im also considering a wavebox but worried since i have drains at opposing ends of the tank.

Let me know if anyone has any sitting around. I miss the back and forth that I had with the OM.
