Flower pot placement?

I acquired a nice purple flower pot yesterday. The previous owner has had it for quite some time and suggested high light/med flow (he was on MH). It looked real good when I picked it up from his place, tons of extension.

The size of the flower pot skeleton is about a tennis ball.

Currently I heeded his advice and have it near the top with some decent flow area. The PE is on and off but never extended fully like yesterday. I run Hydra 52s on a pretty conservative power level. Water params are all in check except Mg which is on the low side, remedying that as we speak.

Any ideas to help out this coral? It's beautiful and I definitely want it to thrive.

Try moving it down. The polyps are rather fragile/sensitive, and they shouldn't be blowing around in strong flow. I'd recommend low to medium flow. Optimally you'd want just enough flow to gently waft the polyps around slowly

let us know how it goes. Im having a similar problem but with a green one. Tried on the high light, sandbed, low flow, high flow but still getting very small extensions from the polyp and its been a month now. I feed it reef roids here and there.

I have my yellow one on sandbed. Low-med flow, low light. In fact its in the shade. The top portion of the pot died sitting directly under the led. Now that its in the shade, it's starting to recover.

Lots feeding!

I'm happy to report that the flowerpot is doing relatively well at the current placement (low flow, sandbed, no shade). I'd say 20% of the polyps are at full extension, while the rest is about half. Hoping it will continue to progress since it's a new addition, I'm willing to give it some time.

Been target feeding phyto a couple times also.

I have one of these too and I agree. Sand bed for placement. I have mine in a corner of the tank with decent flow, but not direct. If you don't have him with med flow over it, I recommend hitting it with a baster every month or so. They accumulate algae on their polyps that they need to get rid of.

Here's a pic of mine. I also just got a red one with three polyps a couple of weeks ago and it already has 12 or so. Good luck.

As you can see, I hit mine with plenty of flow and they green one has been in my tank for about 8 months now. Most people have issues with them not lasting this long.

Medium flow but somewhat turbulent, pulsing or flow coming from 2 directions works for me. You want the polyps swaying back & forth. Direct laminar flow where the polyps are always to one side isn't the way to go.

I used to have one in the middle of a 125 about 1/4 of the way up and it loved that spot anywhere else and it was not as happy
