FMAS elections for 2009

Matt you are absolutely 100 % correct, Answering your questions, last year I chose to take a break from the club as I was starting a new job and had to take care of my baby, I am happy to see that I was missed by you and I am ready and eagor to start again were I left off, I hope you don't see that as a handicap.
I guess I am still not clear how is that letting the club members know that I am running for president and Chris Little is running for VP will inhibit someone capable of running for president from coming forward.

I really would like to see Rogger as President, he always offer a honest advice if you ask for, and always find the time to help or answer any question. He helped me many times by phone without knowing me, iam talking about to give me around 20 to 30 min of his time each time i have a concern with my aquarium.
I dont think it really matter what Rogger did this last year for the club, i think whats important is what he can do next year for the club as President. I Think HE CAN SHOOT THE CLUB TO A NEW LEVEL.

Chris,
As past president, how many board meetings have you attended this year? How did you help the club?

This year there have been about 9 board meetings (2 were never held), and I have attended roughly 5.

This year Herman appointed me to the auction chair position. In this position I coordinated and ran auctions at the general club meetings. I attended board of director meetings in which I was an active participant. I am proud that I was one of the few board members who carried out their chair duties. I was the first to show at many of the general meetings in order to prepare for the evening.

Though past performeance in the club is important, there are many other important factors to consider. After all, out current club president was very minimally involved last year, not even serving on the board of directors.

Let's do our best to look to the future and move this club in the right direction!

Yes the right direction is about 15 miles south, in Miami where it originally started :D

Melvin,

The only reason it is being discussed here is because it was posted here. There was discussion at the board meeting about what should be discussed on RC so that the entire world can see it. I don't think, as I said then, that this is a proper item to be discussed here. It should have been sent to all the members as an email opening nominations and let all the paid members have their input, then it should be discussed among the members.

There is no hidden agenda and I never said that Rogger, Chris or Julio would be good or bad as the positions they are seeking. I have not tried to sway anybody on this subject either. I think that I brought up valid points and asked valid questions.

They can answer the questions as they see fit and they don't have to appease me, They have to appease the paid members of the club.

Rogger,

A person shouldn't open nominations and in the same post nominate himself. I am not sure if I can explain how that would inhibit somebody from apply for the position. But if I saw that my friend was applying for a job and I would have liked to try it then I would back off and not go for it because of my friend. And I think the club is very much that way.

I am on no way trying to flame anybody. I was quite surprised to see this posted and told Chris that on the phone today. As I told Chris, all I care about is the club and how it proceeds into the future.

Matt

Maybe this thread is a way of getting RC back into the picture as a communication tool as to what is going on with the club. That is how I was kept informed when I first joined and this does not seem to happen anymore.

By opening up the lines of communication maybe people will come to the meeting and vote since they know this is happening. Instead of bashing the people that are running for the positions perhaps you should also let us know about the other individuals running.

but i know this will not be agreed with so preech on...

Matt, contrary to your opinion the Club Members are the club!

I don't know how you could have said this any better.

This is my first year in the club. How do election work? Do all club members get the chance to vote for the nominated individuals and their wanted position?

Rogger,

I think you also have to be a paid up member. Is that right?

Jessp,

I am not bashing the people that are running. In fact I don't know of anybody else that is running except those that were mentioned in the first post. That is completely up to each individual member and the nominating commitee.

Has the committee received any other nominations?

I agree that the club members are the club, but that is in a different context as I was stating. If somebody helps only individual members but never helps with club functions or activities there wouldn't be a club. If nobody helped at the club level there would be no club because there would never be anybody to help with the meetings, frag swap, field trips, etc..

Take the holiday party, Somebody has to find a place to have it, somebody has to cordinate the food, the drinks, to help set up, to clean up, to do the finances to pay the bill, etc... Without those people helping, the club would not have a holiday party or tank hop and so on.

Just an FYI,
The FMAS Web site lists the November meeting on Tue. Nov 18. NOT the 25th.
Yes, the meeting has been changed to the 18th now, I guess this due to Thanksgiving celebration.

Yes, it is my understanding that you need to be a paid member to vote, but you don't need to be a member to attend the meetings.
I understand that Tyquan is also interested in one of the two position President or Vice president

I feel an obligation to chime in here my intention is not to side with any of the political issues being banded about. This club obviously has some competing factions that should be resolved. What I do want to say and make perfectly clear. I meet Roger 6 months ago and now consider him a friend and fellow reefer. I have never meet a more caring indivudual when it comes to this hobby or any other hobby I have been involved with. He always has time for discussion, advise, even hands on help. whatever you might need. So I got a little bit disturbed reading some of this thread. Treeman I don't know who you are but if you are half as dedicated as roger maybe he will let you be is VP.. Have a nice day..

Tony,

There is a difference of opinion but as far as I am concerned not different factions. I consider Rogger, Chris and Julio friends. I do believe I have most if not all of their phone numbers. That was and is not the issue. I could have called Chris when I saw this but since it was public I thought it should be talked about publicly.

As I said earlier in the thread, I can not serve on the board. So I do the next best thing, which is to volunteer with my time and money to better the club. I would like to think I am as or more dedicated than Rogger since I do have more than 6,000 gallons dedicated to growing corals and it is my life. I guess you would have to call it my second life since my first was growing trees. ;)

Matt does make one valid point. It would probably make more sense in the future to reach out to those who may be interested in serving the club before the nominating committee makes its recommendations public.

I think we should also try to raise awareness of the Board of Directors and get some newer club members involved in the running of the club and its activities.

I wish all the success to the incoming directors and officers, whoever they may be.

One more point that is important to note...this process should have been started by the adminitration several months ago, but instead has been condensed to a few weeks. Makes it very hard on the election comittee. We didn't even have one general meeting to speak to the members.

I was also told an email would go out Monday about the November meeting including election information and a request for interested individuals for open positions. No email yet (I did volunteer to help with the email last week with no response).

Treeman I would love to see your setup sometime I am sure you can teach me plenty about this hobby. We all are proficient in something diplomacy is just not one of your stronger virtures. I just took exception to the delivery of your message. No one deserves to be blindsided in that way. I will butt out of this discussion as I truly have no real right to an opinion as I am not a member of the club.

I hope there are no hard feelings.Let's get together sometime and discuss reefkeeping.
