? for Randy and or Bertroni, Hanna Temp/PH hand held meter

I have a Hanna hand held PH/Temp meter, my question is after it is in my salt water, do I just put the cover on it? Rinse it in my tap water which is VERY high in Ca, and if I do that, can I /should I rinse it in a vinegar solution to get the dried CA off of it periodically, and if so, will that screw up its calibration?

Cleaning it in vinegar regularly should be fine. The manufacturer should have a storage recommendation somewhere. There are special storage solutions made that are fine for most pH meters.

At the very least, remember to store it wet, not dry. A pH buffer is fine, as is diluted tank water.

Boomer what so yoy meanm about the buffer? should that be to rinse it off or soak the little spong in the cover of the probe?

Interesting. My Milwaukee meter recomends either "storage" solution or pH 7 buffer. The directions for the Hanna pH/temp probe I have at work calls for "storage" solution with no listed alternatives.

Just got off the phone with Jim at TFG's love them 7/24 answers the phone, ordered up a hand held TDS meter, but his up take rinse and store in distilled water or a buffer solution, not RO/DI at all, it will "strip the probe" and need recal.

I do not recommend RO/DI for pH probe storage either, but distilled water will be similar to RO/DI in that respect, IMO.

A "perfect" storage solution will match the internal fluid of the glass bulb of the probe, but that is not necessary, IMO.

What Randy said it true. You will also find many pH probe instructions saying the if you have no storage solution to use pH 4, which also helps keep the probe clean . Most storage solutions are 3M KCl or 4M KCl, which is usually a slightly acidic solution.

I also fixed Jim up at TFG. He did not see the "fine print" on storage and it states " never use distilled or RO/DI water for storage. It just for cleaning and rinsing, which is quite common.

Bob when in doubt count on Boomer he call me this morning and after rereading the instructions I found the storage instructions and what the little sponge is wetted with. It is not distilled water but a pH 4 solution so I was wrong and stand corrected.

Though I did find plenty of KCl in the lab, both dry reagent and a bottle of saturated KCl solution labeled for electrodes

Nah, most everything down here that doesn't belong to either of the professors I work for is long abandoned by other researchers and students that have moved on and just left stuff behind We have quite the accumulation of odd equipment and chemicals laying around down here. I'm sure you could have fun rummaging through our chem lab and making a few things go "boom" as well
