For the love of Genicanthus

Can you post pictures. Losing color as in not as bright or male to female changing? Is he healthy and fat? IIt would be very strange for him to change sex because 315 is hardly the natural range of the male angel. I guess you can add another female to stimulate him. Make sure he is at optimal health include consider treating him for internal parasites.

Sorry I should have been more clear, he is very healthy and nice and fat. He has lost his vertical stripes and the yellow bar down his side. I have to look hard to tell the difference between him and the original female. The only distinguishing features are a little remaining yellow around the nostrils and slightly larger size.

If that is the case I would add another female. I am not sure it will work, but that would be what I would do.

Another revive for an awesome older thread!

I was lucky enough to snag a trio of Watanabes from DD today. They'll be delivered Wednesday. I gave a 40 breeder established as a quarantine tank, but that seems way too small for a trio, especially if the come in on the large side. Does anyone have any thoughts on quarantining?

Eventually they will go into my 210. Almost thinking of skipping the quarantine process completely so I don't stress them out and lose them. The thought of not quarantining scares me to death... even if DD fish are "healthy"...

Any aggression towards Genicanthus added to a 150 gallon tank? Like if you added a Lamarck and a Japanese Swallowtail. Would they need to be equal size or at the same time? Also, if you added females any chance the dominant fish would turn into a male?(same genus but different species)

Agreed. I'm looking for opinions on my 40 breeder as a suitable quarantine tank for the trio. Seems small to me and may add unnecessary stress. I can set up more quarantine tanks if necessary to house them individually.

I picked up a pair of watanabei angels from DD last month. They are awesome. Be patient acclimating them. My female "player dead" at first but I finished the acclimation with the male. Both fish took off and have been doing great. These are great fish. I almost bought the trio, but I opted for the pair instead. Enjoy!!!.

Glad you enjoyed yours and hope they're doing well!! I'm looking forward to mine!

Probably too late now but 40b would be a fine QT.

That's my female Genicanthus melanospilos. She had a hard time when introduced due to my Ctenochaetus strigosus forcing her to jump out of the tank. Solved the aggression with a mirror, now they are best friends. She has become the queen of the aquarium, the tang being the king.
She is really well behavied with other fishes as well as with corals, and she even eats from my hand.
Nice addition for those who don't own a very big tank.

Genicanthus are awesome fish! I had a fairly large melanospilos female by herself for about a year. About a month ago I added a small <3" female and the larger female already has the striping of a male. It's been a crazy fast transformation.

For the record, there was a MMA match between the two for about 3 days before they decided to coexist.
