The stand is made of solid walnut and walnut veneer. I can get pricey depending on where you buy it. I get my solid hardwood from a small shop in Bath. The guy has mostly locally grown hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple, ...
I think his prices are pretty good. The wood for the stand cost about $400 which is less than a nicer manufactured stand. I did buy the columns premade. The only thing is a manufactered stand would already have doors. I am slacking off again Should be out in the shop varishing the canopy right now but I think I used the heat as an excuse today. Haven't figured out what tomorrow's excuse will be yet. Maybe a good movie on TV.
So would I have to get stuff at a specialty or lumber place? Does The Depot or Lowes have anything worth while???
I built a wainscoting in my dining room out of verniered plywood, but I painted over it. I used the vernier so you wouldn't see the wood grain. I didn't recall seeing any super nice verniered stuff.
Millie at CF in Roch built my canopy and it looks like it's made from a 3/4in double verniered plywood. I'd like to use something like that for my next tank. Any tips???
You can special order it at Home Depot or Lowes or any lumber yard. It just won't be cheap. Lowes, Home Depot, most lumber yards should have oak, birch, or maple plywood. Any of those can be stained to look like other woods.
You can most liekly find a hardwood dealer in the Syracuse area if you want something like walnut or mahogany.
Try Woodland Specialties on Canal Street. I have never been there but they have a webpage.
