Found at the Beach...

craziness! So what, someone went and grabbed some stuff from the beach for his tank. Big deal! Yes, I know, taking like that to begin with is taboo, add to that the fact that he took them without knowing first off how to care for them. Yahda yahda yahda. In the whole scheme of things, it's seriously not a big deal. Sure, some people think it is, but did anyone stop to notice how huge the ocean is?

Youre kidding right. The OP was asking how long it takes to cycle a tank in Feb... not much of a background to me. You proved my point that if 95% dont know how to take care of it then they shoudnt take it from the beach and they shouldnt buy it at the store either. Why is it so hard to believe that some people do research before adding stuff to their tank.

yes i was asking about tank cycling in feb...and i didn't add anything to my tank until march...and i haven't had anything die since i started it. thats b\c I did my RESEARCH! I am farmiliar with starfish (I have a brittle star in my tank now) but i mainly wanted to know if the size of the one i got will do ok in a REEF TANK... obviously that must have been a dumb question.

apparently no one should ever start a new hobby because that would mean they would have to ask things about it that they don't know (such as tank cycling). God forbid anyone ask YOU... they may get told not to keep a saltwater aquarium at all.

and yes i just saw the starfish in the water and picked it up...but it was in plain view of anyone who walked by...and had i left it there...it 1) may have died 2) may have been picked up by a tourist who dryed it out and bleached it to keep on their bathroom sink 3) I pick it up or 4) may have lived...no matter which one happend the starfish population is not hurting because of it!!

you are the one that needs a new hobby....maybe bird watching!!

What bugs me the most about this hobby is the irresponsible people that give it a bad name. You are a perfect example of that. You take something without knowing what it is and then ask for help keeping it alive. Its just wrong. I am not some environmental nut trying to save the planet but I know stupid when I see it. You are new to SW and should learn how to properly run your tank before you find more stuff to put in it.

I guarantee that guys like you will be doing the bird watching way before me. You start out all gung-ho and 2 yrs from now youre selling everything off. Are you gonna blame that on people like me who are trying to help you be responsible.

Despite all the bashing, there is one thing I would like to know. What is the status of the fish and crab? How are they doing?

Ok, I quit. You guys win. I guess the next time I'm at the beach I'll just take whatever I can home and see how long it lives. Why not throw caution to the wind... I'm going to get me a big gun and go kill some stuff too. While I'm at it I'll take my used motor oil and dump it in the ocean. Now I'm living the American dream. I'm headed down to red lobster for an all you can eat. Oh yeah, feeling better already. Yeehaw.

fresno has beautiful beaches:p....you should send us Pat Hill, we could use him at SC

Oh and I will give a crisp dollar bill to anyone that goes back and counts the number of unsubstantiated percentages referenced in this thread

fresno has beaches? lol... nope, nada one, and its not even close to the ocean... and yes, i lived in cali on the ocean for years... pismo beach to be exact ;)

I would also like to know the updated status, of the fish especially, or a good pic of them so we can try and help you constructively... i know this thread has gotten a bit silly, but i REALLY think we should try and help the OP out and not close the thread jus yet... jus my 2 cents, on top of the 3 cents i already threw it :) lets help this person out, like the reason RC is here for our disposal... to help each other...

Since the start of my aquaria hobby
I have killed two dozen guppies, few pleco, couple figure eight puffer, some chicklets, 3 tangs 2 clowns 2 angels, a few Sps, a crap laod of soft coral. I should be the one getting bashed for being irresponsible.

And to think of it now..
i lost those Salt water fish from reading to much different opinion about getting rid of itch (different medicine, quarantine,), and when i started to just let the fish be and keep the tank in prestige water condition with good feeding the miss never been better, save me so much money from buying different type of crap.

All i'm its good to get different opinion from different sources but its also good to give a shot on something.

Its a 2 1/2 hour drive to pismo beach from my door step. I go all the time... whats the point. Did I say I lived on the beach... not once. I'm having trouble understanding you people. First, if someone has a different opinion than you ... you call them names. If that doesnt work and they still disagree with you... you make fun of where they live. Unbelievable.

This thread isnt even about the OP anymore, its about anyone that takes stuff home from the beach before knowing how to care for it. Its just that simple.

Just saying but im pretty sure when people go to beaches to grab things that they dont really know what there getting when they get there and that if they see something cool they want, that there a pretty good chance that it will be gone the next time, so they grab it thinking that they may be able to properly care for it, and dont think twice about it ecpecially if they are driving a long distance.

If you hang out in the New To Hobby forum you'll notice the same advice given... go slow and be careful about your stock list. I see it all the time... people not sure about what to add next. To me this is the same thing, a fairly new SW aquarist with a new tank.

Lets suppose for arguments sake that someone bought the starfish and crab at a fish store and asked the same questions... what are they and are they reef safe. Most of the folks would say the same thing, take them back, slow down and do some more research.

Alot of folks are upset because people with my attitude look like a hypocrite but if they could just look at it for what it is. A new aquarist with a new tank, acquiring livestock without knowing what it is.

when i was 28 yrs old my wife told me we were having a child. i begged with her, no no. i dont know anything about babies. lets read up on them first and not rush into this, this could be a disater. what if it wont eat, what if it gets sick, what if it wants an education...how much money do we have to spend to raise this child. OMG. when it grows we might have to get it a bigger bed, then a bigger house. what if it turns out to be a truble maker. ???????????

We can have decent discussion and benefit from it. That's how the early Greeks did it. Problem is, attacks are dominating the discussion instead. Let's focus on constructive comments and refrain from personal attacks and cyniscism. Threads like this helps us learn. I know, I learned a lot about how people think and how narrow some thought processes are. That's ok, they come to realize that when they read other people's comments.

I actually believe the OP did the responsible thing once he took the livestock. He quarantined them and asked questions - yet people are still getting on him for not being responsible?

Showing someone their flaws without listening and knowing everything about the situation, or seeing it from their side is plain ignorance (we're all a little ignorant at times, after all -everyone makes mistakes).... and maybe it was a mistake to take these creatures from the ocean, but whats done is done and the OP needs help caring for them. The proper thing to do is not judgment, rather compassion and expressed assistance in proper ways to go about this hobby. This hobby throws a lot of information and excitement at you at one time.

Maybe we can trump it up to over-zealousness, or even just the lack of view point when the OP was at the beach, whichever it is - chastising him without giving assistance is just as wrong if not worse. This community was established to HELP others, not judge them.

OP,

Would really like to know how things have been working out, and dont let a few people ruin your overall experience in the hobby or even this site. This site is one of the better ones, stick around.

i'm interested in how things are going too and i appreciate that the OP was looking for advice from experienced people on this site. seems responsible to me. people are just crazy. relax out there. this is supposed to be fun. no?

ps...your beaches all suck and you're all dumb for some reason. my opinions are the best. no question. don't even try to disagree. hahahah

Been reading this train wreck since the first post (while eating popcorn) because like a train wreck I just can't look away....First name calling, now racial/sexist comments?! Just thought I'd get...
