Found at the Beach...

I think some of the folks that are being a bit over zealous on self collecting are just trying to vocalize collecting responsibly to help the animals and keep our hobby out of harms way.
Our hobby has come under fire quite a bit lately due to some irresponsible practices.
Laws on collecting vary in different areas.
There are some people on here that collect their own stuff legally and responsibly, wish I could do that myself, I'd love to have a fish in my tank that I could say, yeah, caught that off the coast of blah blah...
If you have an existing tank w/ fish, just be aware it's pretty easy to intro parasites and such, and more important I think is to not release anything from your tank, both fish or plant life back into the wild so as not to introduce anything that is not indigenous to that habitat.

A little late on this posting but you feed it little clams from publix or small piece of shrimp. I found a purple one last weekend in Ormond.

Personally I try to collect what I can out of the ocean. I have a 90 gallon specifically for things I catch from the wild.

Try going to sebastian inlet, you can get sea urchins that are purple or red. They like to hang on the rocks.

Guy 1 "So what you in the joint for?"
Guy 2 "Urchins."
Guy 1 "Tough guy eh?"
Guy 2 "What you in for?"
Guy 1 "Jaywalking."
Guy 3 "I tore that tag thingy off my mattress."

LOL

I wish I was close enough to the ocean to be able to collect things (legally of course). It would be pretty neat to set up a saltwater naive tank.

Where do you think most of the livestocks in your tank come from?

Hopefully not from that tidepool. I think you and everybody else that has some smart comment to make has missed the point. Its not about taking stuff... its about taking stuff that you know nothing about. You cant be that ignorant to think that I dont know where my fish come from. People can call me a hater, hypocrite or whatever else they want and it wont change the fact that I wouldnt have taken them. Thats just how I feel about it. I would have left them there for other people to enjoy. I'm happy buying my fish from my lfs and thats nobodys business but mine. If another one of you whack jobs wants to call me some names... go for it.

Well seeing he has some background in reef keeping... I bet the OP knows the basics... Easily knows how to keep them alive for months at least! Let's be serious here! He asked if they are "reef safe!" It's not like he stuck them in his goldfish tank!!! In fact, a rough guess, I would say out of all the people in the world, 95% don't know the first thing about how to care for this livestock in an aquarium!!!!! Putting this livestock in the best hands of the top 5% of people in the world! Just estimates course... I'm just saying... At very most just tell him to test the beach water...

Can we drop this now and help him ID them!

Wow, made it through about a page and a half and never realized how many hypocrites there are here...99% of u buy and pay for things that this person got for free, WITH a license mind u... I'm sure almost all who posted have been irresponsible, as some of u are calling the OP, as well in this hobby... however I am not saying the OP was irresponsible... I would love to be able to collect my own livestock, as most here, whether they will admit it or not, also would... give a person a break... my goodness...

Youre kidding right. The OP was asking how long it takes to cycle a tank in Feb... not much of a background to me. You proved my point that if 95% dont know how to take care of it then they shoudnt take it from the beach and they shouldnt buy it at the store either. Why is it so hard to believe that some people do research before adding stuff to their tank.

After reading this thread, I determined one thing....

If the OP would just go ahead and eat the starfish, crab and fish like the seagull would have, everything will be fine, and they will no longer be the target of folks who seem to think it's a bad idea to keep anything from the ocean in their tanks.

Now that I'm thinking about it, perhaps I should have me a crab boil this weekend with some fresh local livestock, and while we're cracking the little babies open on the deck, I'll look in through the sliding glass door at my 6' long reef tank full of south pacific beauties.

I know that I have done things in my past that would be considered irresponsible. If it makes me a hypocrite for trying to help someone else from making a mistake than so be it. From the looks of it there alot of folks that collect their own livestock and I have no problem with that as long as they know what they are taking and have some knowledge of how to care for that livestock. I dont see a problem with this thread as it is an open forum where we can share our opinions about these topics.

Ok, I quit. You guys win. I guess the next time I'm at the beach I'll just take whatever I can home and see how long it lives. Why not throw caution to the wind... I'm going to get me a big gun and go kill some stuff too. While I'm at it I'll take my used motor oil and dump it in the ocean. Now I'm living the American dream. I'm headed down to red lobster for an all you can eat. Oh yeah, feeling better already. Yeehaw.

I haven't seen anyone in this thread say that it's a bad idea to keep things from the ocean in their tank. What I have read, is people saying it's not a good idea to take a living animal home when you don't know what it is or how to care for it. I have to agree with those people. If that little fish that the guy collected had been a Redfish (or 1 of many other game fish), he could have been looking at a pretty big fine if the Game warden caught him with it. I collect things from the Gulf all the time, but I don't take things if I don't know what they are. It just doesn't make sense to me to take an animal (any animal, not just fish) out of it's natural enviroment THEN start trying to figure out if you can care for it.

Now you did it, youre gonna be called a hater or a hypocrite for caring about your animals. Whats wrong with you... youre going to make someone want to leave RC with those kind of comments. Dont you know that you cant have an opinion thats different from these peoples opinion. Just forget about it and join me at red lobster (my treat) and we'll discuss how we can pillage the planet.

Sounds good! I'll bring you one of the baby sea turtles I found running across the beach today. I thought a bird might get them or they might burn their flippers on the hot sand, so I figured i'd bring them home & try to figure out how to care for them.

*No sea turtles were actually caught in the making of this thread. That was only sarcasm.

Time for a baby sea turtle BBQ. Whats more American than that. Now we dont have to argue about how were going to keep it alive. Why not invite the good folks here at RC and they can bring their favorite sea animal to the BBQ. I think we should have it at your place. Do you have a pool?

The nature of this hobby brings with it some sort of experimentation, it's the foundation of what keeps it moving along.

Do you think the first person that attempted to keep SW livestock in captivity had Reef Central and volumes of reference material at their fingertips? They didn't, yet they figured out how to do it, and here we are many years later.

Food for thought.....
