Found at the Beach...

You should realize that if nobody ever did this... We wouldn't have this hobby, or need for this very forum. If you think it's wrong to take things from the ocean you should return your live rock, fish and corals you happily paid for...

The "rudeness" you read is an effort show you how ridiculous that comment is...
FYI loads of fish and corals where harmed in the making on this hobby...

I live in Brooklyn NY 10 miles from NYC and know a guy who has a 55 gallon tank filled with anything he catches off the shoreline. Nothing in his tank but free stuff.
He has everything from hermit crabs, fish ,seahorse, snails and starfish. And everything lives. I have a reef tank and because of that I would not add that crab because it probably isn't reef safe but I am very cautious and starfish can be hard to keep in general.
Good luck!

The starfish is a species Ive seen in local shops for the first time within the last month or so. They seem to be excellent sand sifters, and are apparently coral safe. I've put them with a wide variety of coral and anemones, and no issues. They dont appear to have the 'exposure' need that some tidal animals can, meaning they do just fine without regular exposure to the air.

The hermit crab is likely to be destructive. Im sure itll do a nice job of scavenging for you, but some of your coral and clean up crew could be in danger eventually.

All in all, not terrible things to pick up. Certainly less stressful for you to collect and take them right home, rather than go through the chain of collection like every other animal in the hobby does.

Are you kidding? No one was rude to you. You posted a picture of a delicate animal you took and said how do I care for it. You got the reply you didn't want to hear and said you're never coming on this forum again. Judging by your question, I would bet you don't have the proper populated sand bed for the star fish.

This happens all day in the beginners forum... Go tell them the same thing... The LFS just sold it to them.... I guess you never made an errant purchase or had a fish or coral die in your care. Get off the guys back... I guess the star fish would be better as room decor... Go use that energy towards people collecting these guys to kill them and sell them in tourist shops...

ok i take back the comment about not visiting the forum anymore, there are some Humans in here. :) as for the rest of you, I obviously wouldn't ever want to hurt or kill any wildlife, but the fact is they die every day, (in the wild and in transport to LFS) so if i can help to keep some alive then great! but i guess if it makes you feel better by telling someone in a random online forum that you konw more than they do...more power to ya!

I wouldn't have taken those guys home but whats done is done. Just keep an eye on the star as it'll be the most sensitive. Also make sure you QT everything you collected or you could introduce parasites.

As for the negative comments, just ignore them. This is RC. None of us have ever made any mistakes or poor decisions.

im pretty amazed by the different responses. i think that this hobby is all about keeping marine animals alive...i wish i could go to my local beach and pick up wildlife for my tank. what about the countless SPS pieces that go into a tank and RTN overnight? was that wortg tearing it off a rock in the ocean? no but the beauty behind the beast is what we all love this hobby for.

No more than eastern world loves for the western world to pay money to have someone else come over and pillage there oceans

These discussions always crack me up. Some people are so high and mighty! If you ever thought about all that humans have done to this planet and to individual species on this planet, I think a couple crabs and a starfish can be forgiven. Everyone likes to point a finger but, what about you, do you live in a house made of mostly wood? What about the poor squirrels who don't have trees anymore? What about the forrest that used to reside on your yard? Cut down and planted with nice green turf. What about the deer that used to live there? It isn't your resource any more than anyone elses. Whens the last time they cut down palm trees to build houses? Thanks for you Floridians cutting down our trees to build your homes, brings a tear to my eye as well!

Hey mford,

glad to hear they are doing ok. I suppose the real concern is the possibility of bringing home parasites/crypto. Once I tried to take home some very pretty polyps that had washed up after a storm an dwere still alive (see them bake in the sun all the time). I didn't have a filter, and they didn't make it. I say stock up bro.

In college we had a large aquarium room with a pretty impressive system. The marine biology students would take regular trips to the beach and seine the coastal waters for (research). We had everything from red drums to pompanos, whiting to lizard fish, and yes crabs and stars...not one thing wrong with it...

ahhh, i love it when you northerners come down and steal from our beaches, bring a tear to my eyes.

You own no part of any beach, not even a single grain of sand... even if some government entity can give you a deed to a beach, I got a bridge I'd like to sell you...

Neither is really yours... Or truly theirs to sell in the first place...

Additionally, just b/c you live closer to some location doesn't make it yours any more then it makes it mine...
