foxface just hanging out

I got a fox face on monday. He was fine and swimming around. Tues he was hiding and came out when i fed the other fish. Today he was wedged between a rock and looking very distressed. I pulled him out and put him in a qt tank to see what is going on with him. Now he just hangs out by the heater and doesn't move at all. He swims very little. Other fish in main tank are a blue tang 2 naked clowns and a lawnmower blennie. I got the fox and blennie at same time. The blennie is doing good i guess. He just hangs out in the rocks and looks like he is biting the rocks. Any thoughts on what might be going on here. water is as follows temp 80, amm 0, nitrates 0, nitrites 0, dkh 8, calcium 380. That is all I have tests for. My water is fine. So i am clueless on this one.

The fish should have been QT'd and medicated 6 weeks before going into the display tank. If the fish is infected, your entire tank will likely be infected as well. Water quality is irrelevent. Long term success will only come with proper QT. A fish may look perfectly fine when you first get it but that does not mean anything.

Good luck with the situation and remember: nothing good happens quickly in this hobby. Patience, patience, patience.

Foxfaces have a "stressed-out"/night time coloration that is quite different than their normal coloration.

IME, and that of others, foxfaces take awhile to calm down and get with the program, so to speak, so the fact that your fish was hiding isn't surprising. Give the fish some time, and let it acclimate to its new digs.

Foxfaces are fairly disease resistant, so while I do recommend a QT for them (and all new fish), I wouldn't treat the fish prophylactically without good reason.

he will be fine as long as he doesn't get ich..my foxface was the smallest one when i put him in with my tangs and then he got stressed out and ich all over i had to qt them all then they became friends till the 4th week then they started fighting so back to the main tank and all is well , matter of fact this foxface has turned dark in color then slimed off this coat then he was bright and colorful , then 2 to 3 weeks later again , and another month again guess what he is the biggest fish in the tank now i had no clue they grew so fast has this happened to your foxface maybe he is going thru a growth spurt?

I would not give up on a Foxface. I think they generally are good reef tank fish. I got one about two weeks ago and he did not eat for the first week, but now is showing up at chow time. However, he is not picking at the hair aglea too much yet, which is why I added him to the mix.
