Frag donations?

Hi all,

I was recently informed about LIRA from Mike (wantagh) and I wanted to post a request for frag donations. I am a chemistry teacher at W.C. Mepham High School in Bellmore. I was awarded a $2000 grant from ING to setup a Chemistry of the Saltwater Reef project and most of my budget has been spent on equipment. I'm setting up 2 24 gallon Aquapods (Joe from Atlantis Marine World suggested I setup two small tanks instead of one large one since I'll be breaking it down each summer, then restarting in September)

I'm looking for any type of frags or even LR people are willing to donate. One tank will be for softies and LPS primarily and the second tank will be dedicated to SPS.

Thanks for your help!

Lee

Hey Lee, Let me know when you are ready. I can set you up with a bunch of stuff. I have added some pretty cool stuff to the tank since you last saw it. I got the exotic bug!

wouldn't two aquapods add upto only about a grand at the most? considering the HQIs are ~500 more or less. did you do mods on them? just wondering b/c APs are basically all in one reef set up. what will you do with the livestock during the summer?

JCnflies - I'll keep you in mind next time I head out to Atlantis Marine World - thnx

fishome25 - where are you on L.I.? You can pm me if you like. I don't coach hockey yet, just playing.

mgny - Hey thanks mike. I know I have your # somewhere. Thanks for the help and I'll be in touch soon. I'm hoping to be ready to go after Thanksgiving.

kigs - I have 1 150W HQI AP and 1 PC. I'm doing some small mods myself but I needed two chillers (my room is on the third floor and temp is unpredictable) a skimmer, stands, some digital equipment, plumbing supplies, live rock, fish, coral etc. Things add up quick.

kigs - As far as livestock goes I have an agreement with my LFS as far as fish and inverts go, kind of a revolving credit as long as things are alive. Coral I can keep in my 90 gallon at home and if I'm overstocked my LFS will take stuff and hold it over the summer or give me a credit. If the coral really takes off, I'll have to frag it and offer it back to anyone here on L.I. :)

i have some kenya tree that seems to grow like aiptasia. i'll be glad to donate a frag if you'd like.

I might be able to get my hands on a lot of zoas, colt coral and mushrooms.
If you're interested, I'll find out more for you.
Cheers

Reef Junkie (Bill)- I was secretly hoping you'd catch this thread :) You had given me a great link for taking pictures a while ago that I appreciated very much. Very interested, let me know. Thanks!

Lee

Lee,

I think a lot of people secretly want me here.

No problem, glad to help.;)
I was by my friends house today and he is the one that has the livestock. There is a lot of it. I'll probably talk to him tomorrow and I'll ask him to donate it. The tank is coming down, well the coral portion of it.
BTW, is it tax deductable? :)

I might have some gorgonians to donate as well.;)

Hey Bill,

Thanks a bunch. I'd be happy to write a letter with school letter head to verify any tax deductions someone wanted to make. Why not? Coral = $ ;)

Gorgonians would be fine too. I'm not picky, the kids are just so excited about this tank getting up and running. They keep asking when it's going to be more than just a tank full of saltwater and rock :)

Lee

No worries.
I spoke to him today, it's just a matter "when" I can get in to remove the livestock.
The gargonians are yours.;)

PM me, we'll setup a pickup time.

I just wanted to post a quick "thank you" to Bill (reefjunkie) and John for donating their time, live rock and coral.

I haven't forgotten the rest of you, (especially Mike (mgny) :). I just have to make the time to call and pickup items.

Talk to all of you soon!

Lee

Lee,

No problem bro, glad to help for a good cause. Don't forget about Randy. He'd be flattered if your students wrote him!

Tell me those zoas we found in his basement aren't freaking incredible!? Mine opened last night and they had a purple center with a bright green star pattern on the oral disk. I will have to get a good pic and submit them to zoaid.

How are all the animals doing?

Bill,

All the animals are doing great and everything is opening up. I know you wanted me to keep the gorgonians at home, but the space I have for them has too much flow, so they keep getting smacked around. I might have to move them to school.

The kids are freaking out over the coral. They're like "Hey, those look like mushrooms!" When I tell them that's what we call 'em it blows their mind.

The zoa's "we" found, right. I thought those zoas were sweet when I saw them. I had to point them out in the hopes of getting a frag. They opened right away for me too and look as described.

When I get some kids asking about extra credit I'll have them start reading Randy's articles. I won't hit a major part of the Chemistry curriculum where the tank parameters chem is applicable until later in the year. I'll write him and let him know what I plan on doing though.

That is good news! I'm glad to hear the kids loved them.
I might be able to get you more animals, even some ultra green star polyps.

Yeah, "we", alright you found them, but I convinced John to give them to us. He wanted to keep them, remember?

Anyway, I'll reach out to my buddy that has the way overgrown tank to see if he'll part with some animals for you. He's in Port Washington, so maybe I'll just get the animals and bring them home so you just have to come here? Or maybe I'll come over your house with them? I want to see your tank.

This sounds awesome guys--congrats! Having kids around, or even adult non-reef people, makes it new again for us too, no?

I don't have much in the way of frags to donate (tank is pretty lame at the moment) but if I can help in any way please let me know--

Christine
