Fragged My Magenta Magnifica

Here is the 'split' acquired from aforementioned local reefer. Given the long story of this anemone, hopefully this clone will not die on my watch.

Really a spectacular specimen. About 8-10 inches. Must have split at the mouth, which is still at one edge and busily attempting to eat a few of its own tentacles.

I am glad you got him. I would like it better if I got him but that is life. If he split please think about selling one to me.
Looking good

Lots of 'flakes' in this hobby. Frustrating if you're trying to sell something, but helpful if it means getting something like this even though not among the first few to express interest.

Simon,
Congrats on the beautiful anemone. I had the chance of picking it up but decided to pass on it since I'm more focus on the SPS. I'm glad it went to a good home. I'm sure Greg is as well. Please keep us updated.

My experience with these things is that you really must have a spot purpose designed for the anemone, otherwise it is just a matter of time before it lays waste to your tank. Either my moving around or by taking a one way trip through the powerhead.

Glad you decided to pass :):).

its destiny for you and the mag. i was contemplating of getting it as i saw the post like 10 mins after it was up but i have decided against it because i love my gigs more and i do not want to risk a chemical warfare between the 2 species altough i have seen tank with bot species. Good luck with it and hopefully one day it too will split for you. that mag (the mother) has been around for a very long time.

I've never had the courage to keep multiple anemone species in my display - nor multiples of the same species, frankly (unless one includes aptasia or majano :)), so I'm totally with you. This one really is a spectacular morph though .....

Pictures 1 and 4 are with flash; 2 and 3 without. Though I am not doubting its a magnifica, it looks a bit different form the others I have kept - has a much wider 'face'. Cannot get a good shot of what I mean, really.

Very nice clone, that's awesome it self fragged. This must be the "Christmas Ritteri" with the Red, Green and White.

Let's hope so. Although a long time mag keeper, I have never had one split in my tank despite a couple of them reaching considerable size. Not sure why. A buddy of mine has one smaller than my last one and it has split at least 3 times that I can recall.

I have a feeling that mags can sense when they "need" to split, whether it be due to stress or to protect a territory, or another reason. I think that most mags are "happy" in our tanks, which is why they don't split very often.

I'd be curious to know if your buddy's mag was constantly moving around or shared a tank with other nems.

I guess I should have said 'had' as he's no longer in the hobby. But, it's a good point because he had a number of anemones in the tank, including a haddoni and gig to go along with the mag.

I think there are some Magnifica cultivar that is prone to asexually reproduced while other does not. It seem that this is very similar to BTA.
Stress is only one of the stimulant for splitting with my Magnifica. I had a Magnifica that split three times. The first time was within 2 weeks of him getting into my tank. Each of the clone split a year or two later, when they reach larger size.

Pretty awesome old thread - Just got myself one yesterday and hoping it's acclimating ok. I did see Joe's monstrous Magnificas at the Long Island Aquarium this summer which were stunning.

Any specific tips for Magnifica growing other than feeding and good flow/light? Keeping it in a basket for now.

High flow, high light, place it at the top of a structure where it thinks it's at the highest point in the tank and it shouldn't wander if it's healthy. Getting them healthy is the hard part, I believe in a video or somewhere on the internet Joe even attested to this saying that he went through many before getting one to survive. Treatment with these is almost always necessary after shipping, finding one healthy from a local reefer that's had it a while is the easiest way to own one. Also don't give the anemone the option to climb up the glass, if it can touch the glass or an overflow it will climb up it.

Did you know they split when they're stressed

Not in my experiance. Mine split over Dec 2011/Jan 2012. I'd had it almost 6 years at that point, and it had been the same tank in the same spot the entire time. SPS were growing and doing well in the tank at that point. I'm not aware of any stress that could cause a healthy H. magnifica anemone to split but still not affect SPS, short of a bacterial infection that would have been anemone specific and most likely fatal to the anemone since I did nothing to treat it. Additionally, there was another H.magnifica anemone in a different tank, but plumbed into the same system that showed no changes during this time frame.

In 2013 my heater failed and I was busy with work and didnt catch it until too late. All SPS died and both H.magnifica anemones bleached completely. As in bone white. Neither one split during this incident and after several months, I was able to bring both anemones back to full health.

Pretty much was JoshKY stated.
IME, shipping is very hard on these animals, but once they get acclimated and healthy, they seem pretty much bulletproof.
