Fragged My Magenta Magnifica

Ellery
that is a nice nem. perhaps you should start a separate thread of this nem and keep us updated on the progress, all the while leave this thread the way it is so the owners of these clones can keep us updated on theirs.

best of luck with that beauty.

ca1ore,
How is your Flighty Fuschia (TM) H.magnifica anemone doing?

Sorry for the tardy response. Nem has been very restless lately. It's grown quite a bit so I thought perhaps a split was coming, but it's been a few weeks now and nothing. It hasn't left the rock, but last week walked onto a pink birdsnest. Latter was a gonner (no biggie because I have lots of frags of it) but more significantly, the retreating anemone punched a few holes in itself. Looked a bit saggy for a day or two, but appears to have healed (fingers crossed).

Glad to hear it's doing well.
What do you think caused the wandering?

Mine only wandered when lighting or flow changed. When those two remained constant, they have always stayed put. It doesnt have to be optimal lighting or flow either, just constant from what they were introduced to.

I wouldnt sweat the punctures. If the anemone is healthy, it will likely have already recovered.

Yeah, already recovered as far as I can see. Still 'restless' though. Never having had one split in my tank I don't know how long it usually takes, but I still think it may be thinking about it :).

Been a bit lax this Summer on husbandry, and have had pocillopora colonies pop up all over the place, including on the mags rock. Snapped a bunch if them off this weekend, so perhaps that'll ease the restlessness a bit.

It took right about 3 months for mine to finish splitting.
The last months was just waiting for the two halves to finish the split. Both had mouths by the middle of the second month of the split.

Well, sad to report that while at work today, mag must have released from its pedestal and got puréed by my vortech. Really ripped to shreds. Not much left to try to save unfortunately. Have never had this happen in almost 25 years of mag keeping. Calls for a big waaaaaaah!

Sorry to hear, Simon. Tough loss. :sad2:

I know, MAJOR bummer. Not sure what to expect. Not had this happen before, though I have read about folks losing many of their fish as a result of broadcasted nematocysts. So far, and I stress, so far, only my single green chromis has died. None of the other fish look all that worse for wear actually, and are eating as normal. Corals all look ok as well. Aggressive skimming, extra carbon, new poly filters and a good sized water change. Not really much more to be done.

The only amusing thing is that my clowns, never having been without an anemone, are swimming about in what appears to be the fish equivalent of a 'daze'.

Interesting that when I was a work yesterday, I got a bunch of alerts form my apex saying the skimmate container was full. My MTC skimmer is really stable, so to have the container fill completely in one day meant that something had gone amiss. I'd hoped it was coral or clam spawn, but alas it was not.

Really sorry to hear about the mag, but I'm very happy to hear your tank seems to be doing okay otherwise.

Reef Central member Flighty reminded me of this thread. The Magnifica I got from her many years ago split spontaneously twice on me, but a few months ago it decided to move from it's rock pedestal home of many years down the rock structure to the front glass of my tank. I figured it was 'challenging' me to frag it so I gave Flighty a call and she said it worked for her on the same anemone, so give it a shot. It's been about 5 weeks now and all healed up and both pieces are now taking food again. It was stressful on me cutting it, but worthwhile I think for us to add to the knowledge as to how to propagate these in captivity.

Regarding how I did it...pretty much just cut right though the whole think about in half straight through the mouth. Having it on the glass made it very easy. The two pieces are still on the glass in the same spot as before.

Unlike BTAs, I typically don't recommend people cut their magnifica. However, the caveat is when a mag splits on its own as it's indicative that it can split. I had one that started splitting, but never finished the process on its own. I decided to finish the split by cutting the nem, and both sides healed perfectly fine.

I believe that some mags can't be force propagated, and if cut, will die. The same actually applies to BTAs, which is why we sometimes see small BTAs that split all the time, versus monster ones that seem to grow and grow and never split. Other than size, I see no physical difference to indicate which are able to split and which do not.

Excellent Greg! Sounds like you did an in-tank surgery on the mag?
Got any picture of it?

Congrats! I would also love to see a picture of them now. I followed this thread since the beginning years ago and am very interested to see how they're doing.
