so when i cut my toadstool leather off with a sharp knife. and i leave some tissue behind to regrow, im hoping that there wont be an issue with any toxins? whats everyones take on this? i run 24-7 rox carbon

if you leave a "stump" it will regrow.

best bet for fragging Sarcos is slicing the "cap" like pizza slices.

all of this is best done outside the aquarium in a separate container of water but if you do it in your aquarium I don't think it will kill anything, Brandon.

your first cut of the stalk will leave a stump and a severed cap. Then cut the cap into pizza slices...but not too many

exactly.

think of the "cap" as a pizza and make slices accordingly.

I'm never short of opinions and here's an unsolicited one from yours truly:

get rid of that Sarco totally. Anybody can grow those things.

haha i cant! 2 reasons.

its grown into and onto the rock multiple places. and 2, it was my first frag ever! lol maybe it is time to outgrow it

Pretty easy thing to frag Brandon. IMO, one of the easiest and most hardy corals to frag. Pizza slices are perfect. Each slice should be about 10% of the cap if not a bit more. I usually just rubber band them to a piece of live rock because sometimes glue either A)Doesn't stick or B) Kills that part of the coral and may cause an infection. I also go with the fragging in a large tupperware dish. Leathers are notorious for releasing toxins when harmed or cut so it's best to keep it out of the main system. Hope that helps boss!

What kind of statement is that? "Anybody can grow those things.". I think that's snobby. Anybody can go buy a diamond, should I tell my wife to get rid of hers?

I'm sorry you didn't like my post.
You'll have to learn to get over your sensitivities (as did I).

Where Acropora choke off shipping channels in the south Pacific locals refer to them as "weeds".
One man's trash is another's treasure.

Brandon has an SPS aquarium and his Sarco should be removed from it in my opinion- and I'm surely entitled to an opinion as much as you are!

Leathers can release toxins particularly when stressed.. Sacrophyton can be one of the more toxic. So if it shows signs of stress and decay get it out or it can ruin a tank.

Having said that I keep them in my system without trouble . I keep sinularia and nepthea too along with sps just because I like them. Some in the same tank with acros. I also skim heavily and use gac and purigen 24/7. Many consider it a better course to avoid leathers and sps in the same system and I know I'm pushing it some but have had luck with it for a number of years. A stressed leather can and will ruin a tank,in my experience,so just be sure to watch it and take it out if it shows signs of decay. Touching by leathers and other corals is a problem if it occurs ,imo.

For frags I take buds that naturally occur just before they fall or I slice an inch or so off an edge, maybe 3 inches long and then cut that into frags. I glue a toothpick to a rock and skewer the frag. It takes a week or two to attach to the rock. Then I snip off the tootpick.

it should be noted that this is Brandon's thread and my post(s) are directed to him

It's absolutely ridiculous that a third party ask me here if they should comment on their wife's diamond :lmao:

You can run a Sarco through a food processer, place the chunks on the bottom of an aquarium and grow hundreds of them and (in fact) it's been done before.

I would (try!) and remove that Sarco, Brandon.
You have easy access to cully's SPS and you have the smarts to grow 'em.

I'm sure that you understand where I'm coming from.

darnit, another pump failure when i got home. and the good thing about octopus skimmers is that when the friggin sump fills up it overlfows the crub BACK INTO MY SUMP! i hate my life , i cant wait to get a new pump OMG lol

i definitely understand both points of view though Gary. but i do agree with ya 100%, and they are easy to grow and i should remove it from my system given my other corals.

i hope i can get ride of the tissue. its kinda adhered to 2 spots, and is pretty stuck on the rocks. any ideas?

any portion of a Sarco that's left behind can possibly grow into another coral. You can use a toothbrush to try and scrub any remaining tissue off. Larger Sarco's will leave behind a tough stump that's very difficult to remove. You can keep slicing at it and blast it with kalk paste and/or liquid alk mix.

Good luck- they can be a real PITA to get rid of.

If you decide to remove it I'm sure that you can fill it's spot with something really nice :)

IMO if you like it and enjoy looking at it keep it! If not there are a ton of ppl on here that would gladly take it from you. I dont really see what the ease of growth has to do with whether or not you should keep it. I have quite a few LE chalices that grow like weeds but I would never part with them....

I'm in total agreement.

I happen to know Brandon's situation extremely well.

LE chalices are scleractinian corals and therefore I would never refer to them as weeds! :)

yea definitely, but idk what would do well in a slow flow high light area? any good ideas Gary?

I had two large devil's hand leathers growing side by side, so I chopped one off as near the stump as possible this afternoon. I removed the cut piece and gave it to my sister. I also took out a handful of brown button polyps. I replaced the carbon in my reactor and did a 5 gallon water change a couple of hours later. I'll keep everybody posted if my tank goes to hell...
