Frags in Bags

Is it reasonable to think that frags will be okay in shipping bags for 24-30 hours? I know stuff is packaged much longer than that when it comes from the Pacific. What about a small clam, or a large encrusting montipora? I'm bringing some neat stuff back from Fla this trip, and I should be home tomorrow afternoon/evening (unless there's a cool store in Atlanta). I picked everything up this afternoon on my way out of town. All of the ORA frags are nicely encrusted, but I've never transported a clam this way. They are all seperately packed, each in a good bit of water w/ oxygen. Everything is in coolers to help maintain temp.

Also realized that I'm just too dang old to drive this on one shot anymore, so they're bunking with me tonight.

Should be fine. It is not so much the time in bags but the conditions they are under during that time. Keeping the temp constant with no extremes is most important. Just don't have large temp swings and you should be golden.

I had some stuff shipped to me this past saturday. when it was delivered, they never rang the door bell nor knocked on the door, so I had no clue it was delivered. When my g/f got home at 4pm she found it and when I opened it up, the bags were 90+degrees(it was 98 here saturday). I slowly acclimated them over a 24hr period, and everything made it. Excluding clams, alot of corals, sps especially are found in shallow water(which is why they require high lighting) which the water temps can easily get into the 90's and some are exposed to open air at lowtide, and do fine that way. IME, corals ship/transport best in the summer time, fish do better in the winter.

They should be fine as long as you keep the temp reasonable. I brought some stuff up from Tampa over Christmas, and again in May (I think). The only thing I had trouble with was a pea-sized frag -- it made the trip but didn't survive the interceptor or the iodine dip. It was a tiny frag, though, and I may have been a bit overboard with the dose of interceptor and iodine I blasted it with.

I've driven corals and fish back from Orlando to Knoxville with no problems, they were even bagged the night before the return trip. I do have the store bag me up some extra water and bags in case of leaks.

There is a GREAT LFS in Marietta, GA. It is called Cappuccino Bay. The address is 2195 Roswell Rd. It is well worth your time to stop. I have a buddy that lives down there and I have bought lots of stuff from them. Have a safe trip.

That's pretty sweat... I'm a sucker for the contrasting colors of the skeleton and the polyps that you get with a lot of montis (at least it looks like a monti to me).

Thanks, Brian. I have a thing for montis as well. The polyps on this one are brown w/ purple tips, and I picked it up from a mariculture place. Picked up a neat ORA german green w/ blue polyp frag, another monti (confusa), and some other ORA frags. I really wish I had a macro lense on my digital cam.

That's a nice M. nodosa. I had one that color before the move (but it was only about 3/4" in diameter). Nice find.

I am originally from the S. Fla area, and we have a family place in Boynton Beach. I found a new local place down there this last trip, and got this monti there. Also picked up several ORA frags and some other aquacultured stuff from a couple of other shops. There are numerous stores with excellent coral selection in the Ft. Lauderdale/West Palm area. This coral has some lobes that I will probably cut off and transfer to my prop system once it settles in.
