Free-floating Nem?

At about 4pm today, my grapefruit sized nem was on a walk-about. About an hour ago (7:30), I found him chopped up inside a power head two feet away, on the glass. That seems like a long walk in that short period of time. Do they free float?

He's about the size of an orange now. What are his chances for survival?

Without pictures its hard to say if he will make it or not. Yes they can free float, thats how he got sucked in the powerhead. How long has he been in the tank?

About 3 months. Can't really help with pictures - he's still stuck inside the PH grates. I removed the top and put it back in the tank. I would imagine if he lives, he can get himself out.

wow i had the same thing happen to me last week before taking a 5am flight out of town. Since I did not have time to same mine i had to let him go. I did to about a 25%water change that morning. You are going to need to watch your water perms. As if he did get chopped up it will mess with the water.

Best of luck.

+1, my free floated too. I didn't realize this until he ended up on the other side of the tank in a very short period of time.

He's still stuck in the PH grates but is moving. Do you think he'll be able to get out by himself? How long should I wait before I cutup the PH?

You don't have to cut up the powerhead. Just take it out and gently take it apart and you should be able to get the nem out without much damage. After you have it out, place it in a crevice in the rockwork and place a plastic fruit container or plastic strainer over the top of it to protect it.

It's stuck inside the grates (slots) of the front of the PH. I cannot take it apart. At this point, I could only cut the fins out our let him get out on his own.
