Freebie mantis I got from the LCS!

He's super cool, lives in the little snail shell so far. He is in a 10 galon with LOTS of LR, some zoo's, mushrooms, snails and a small clown. I'll ask my supplier where the order came from that he likely arrived on.

I have no clue what he is, I even looked through the ident page and couldn't figure it out.

It's maybe 1.5" long at MOST with a burgendy colouration and paired white spots along the length of its carapace.

The tank is all his, and I will upgrade size when the time comes! All it has now is an aquaclear filter with LR rubble in it, a ebo jager heater, and a small flourescent light. I do a 1 galon water change on it maybe every two weeks. He's in the shell underneath the end of the heater.

He eats mysis/brine/squid right out of a dropper. Still a little skidish though. Let me know if I should be doing anything different or if you know what it may be!

It is a Haptosquilla, but would have to see more to tell what species.

Thank you Roy! I will do my best to get some better pictures of him once I get home from work (a couple weeks). By then Im sure my girlfriend will have him coming out for food and being a little more open.

You can easily get them to come out to grab a brine shrimp, but only for a second. These guys really like to stay in their cavity. Photographing them is a pain. As long as they have a cavity, that is where they stay.

hey i thought you had to keepp those ebo jager heaters dry above the set "water line"?

They will get a little humidity after a couple years submerged.

There is a new ebo now that is totally submersible, or so they claim.... bet you it still has a water line on it to pass safety.

I had a heater go bad and kill three stomatopods before I figured out the problem. By the time I did so, the rock and sand were thoroughly contaminated (copper? some other metal?). In any case, it was a frustrating and expensive problem -- had to completely start over.

I only use Stealth heaters now. Period. Highly recommended.
