freshwater "treats" OK for mantis?

My LFS sells ghost shrimp and crayfish. I know neither are acceptable as a primary food source (not the right nutrition for saltwater), but could either be fed as a live "treat"? I'm a little worried about heavy metals and pollution with the crayfish, but the ghost shrimp loop promising (or doomed...depending on which way you look at it).

Thanks. I put in a few ghost shrimp last night. The silly things immediately started heading for the nice, dark PVC hole (NOT a good idea).

According to the LFS, the crayfish are farmed in ponds in Florida specifically as feeders. So, pollution shouldn't be a problem.

In the mean time, Lucy is contenting herself with cutting a deadly swath through the snails I added.

When feeding crayfish treats or crabs for that matter, either choose ones that don't have big claws or take them off before dropping lunch into the tank. It's possible for them to get in a lucky shot and do some serious damage and even take an eye. Eyes don't regenerate.
