This is an excerpt from the weekly newsletter from my LFS here in good old dayton, oh.

"...Tangs are a good example here. In a 100 gallon aquarium, 6 might do fine and show off that wonderful swimming behavior. But in a 55 gallon more then one can be a problem. So it is best to add tangs last to your smaller aquariums and keep them with similar size fish. This way problems can be reduced."

This is the advice they give aquarists. Can you find the problem with this paragraph? The sad thing is, it's the only full time LFS in the Dayton area...
 
I don't listen to lfs's advice and don't bother asking them questions anymore. If they ask if I have any questions I tell them no. The only time I will actually conversate with them is when I'm ready to purchase and need them to catch the fish. They're a business looking to do business.
 
I totally understand. And i wouldn't be surprised if they left it at a tang in a 55, but 6 in a 100 just seemed so crazy to me to suggest haha.
 
The LFS constantly wins in that situation...

You buy all of the fish you want, add a couple of tangs, and fall in love with them. Then they become stressed from being cramped and fighting, and break out with ich that kills all of your fish and infests your tank.

Since you fell in love with the fish already, you go back to the LFS and buy more fish to stick in your ich infested tank, and the cycle goes on, and on, and on... Oh yeah. Somewhere along the line, they convince you to buy all types of chemicals to fix your water. Then when that doesn't work, they start selling you their water... And yet, the cycle continues to go on, and on, and on...
 
We had a chain called Jack's aquarium but they changed their name to Jack's pets and most of them stopped selling SW.

Tang police and grammar nazi heaven.
 
Yep, the fish die, or kill each other, and then they sell more fish. However, once the customers figure this out, this store may not stay around. It may be simple ignorance, but that's not good news either.

Like I mentioned above, unfortunately they're the only game in town :( There is a small store north of town, but they are only open a few days a week in the evenings.
 
Yeah. You are in a tough situation. I end up ordering mine or travelling to Atlanta (400 mile round trip) if I can't find what I want here.

Very limited supply here in Alabama as well.
 
It's not that I'm totally SOL. Cincinnati and Columbus aren't too far (within an hour to hour and a half), but it's nice to have a place you don't have to make plans to stop into.

This sounds like a John Gerber quote and sales tactic
 
Man I guess im lucky. I can get my LFS owner to order me anything in pretty much, he regularly stocks ORA stuff, and is always open and clean. But then again people from 300 miles around go there to shop.
 
I guess I'm lucky. Of the 3 LFS I typically go to, all of them seem to be fairly honest. Many times I've been told "don't buy X" or "that won't do well with your other fish." I've almost always found something suitable to purchase (shhh don't tell the wife) so maybe they know me and figure BS isn't necessary.
 
The funniest part is they received a shipment of about 50 or so yellow tangs and a couple of koles last month. They still have quite a few left so hence the timing on the article.
 
And they're also overpriced.
