frustrated with Jaebo wp 40

greddy1 I bought the WP40's back in Feb of last year, when I first heard about them. 2 for me and 2 for a friend. Again in March I bought 2 more. One of my friends went out in about 9 months, got it replace and no more problem with that one. One of mines went out in about 10 months got that replace and no more problem. Also I bought 2 WP60's when they came out don't know when. I haven't had any problems with them. Long story short, the last time one went out a couple of weeks ago first-street made me the deal on the replacements. I think the replacement are built better than the first generation pumps. because I haven't had any problems with the replacements.

Get a Tunze Stream 6085, nearly the same output but a bulletproof, quieter, and lower power consumption pump. They're about 180 with free shipping, the price of your jebao plus one set of "replacements".
I too tried the Jebao route, I will never do that mistake again.

I would like to go with Tunze, but I have enough replacement part to last awhile and I do have good flow in my 300 gallon DT, with two MP60's and two MP40's with d0ughb0y custom controller controlling the four pumps.

I wouldn't go that far with "quality". In the past I've sent in the wet side for my mp40 because it was making some kind of noise. I was told that there was sand in it. My setup at the time was BB and I had just cleaned the wet side before shipping it off to them... I wonder how sand got into the wet side:rolleyes:.
So your bare bottom tank never got bits of rock that came off the live rock you had in the tank? Pretty unlikely. I run a 465 gallon BB SPS reef, and I get small sand like pieces off my rock and corals all the time. You have critters burrowing in your Live rock all the time. What do you think their tailings look like? Sand, maybe? Your fish will break of small bits of your LR as well.

Your BB tank is making sand wether you are aware of it or not, and this could easily be what got into your wet side.

I agree, but if a jebao last me for a year a piece that is 6.5 years for the same price.. if they last two years that would be 13 years for same price. So i think you get my point. I don't even use them. I have just experimented with them and vortices. I didn't seem much of a difference between them at all..

I have 5+ years on two MP40s I currently use.

I am all for affordable products, but the two pumps are totally different design and technology. A circulation pump purchasing decision can be based on cost, or product design, or programming ability, or heat transfer to the tank, or aesthetics, or any combination of the above. The Vortechs have in spades several qualities the Jaebos do not have.

But the only thing in common the Jaebaos have with Vortechs is the cheap ripoff of the Vortech model designation. In terms of product design they are really more a direct comparator of the Tunze 6105 pump, not the Vortech.

It is really quite simple. If you plan to be in the hobby for some length of time, it is BEST to buy reliable equipment. If you are not sure, buy middle level equipment. I have a set of 6100s that are over ten years old, performing the same since day one. I would purchase the Jebao for $100 with the expectation of it lasting 12 months; anything beyond that is a bonus. Reliability trumps cost.

I own one also but went into it knowing that they may not last. So far mine has been good. But it was worth the risk with the price. I never expected it to last like my Tunze units. At the end of the day crap is crap. I hope they come up with a soloution to help you.

And what was the outcome?

They shipped it back to me stated that it's working fine after they cleaned it. I'm not sure why they needed to clean it when I soaked it in vinegar, cleaned it, inspect it and then shipped it off to them:confused:. Anyway, I got it back and hooked it up with the same issue. Called back, complained and finally someone decided to listen and went through some trouble shooting with me. I was then told that it was the dry side. I expressed that they wasted my time and I didn't want to send in the dry side when we weren't sure what was causing it since I only have one unit. Was finally offered some exchange program where I purchase a new wet and dry side then shipped the old parts back to them once the new parts arrived. The new parts fixed the issue.

Bottom line, they lied to me about sand in the wet side and should have given me an honest answer.

Sorry OP, got off track. I hope you're able to get an exchange on it.

So fixing your issue was bad customer service? Got it.

I think he is saying it is bad CS because they stated nothing was wrong with it and sent it back to him even though there was clearly something wrong.

I understand that, I guess to me stuff happens and they ultimately fixed the issue, I would guess the pump is still being used so why ***** about it. At least with Ecotech there was that option.

looks to me like they were replaceing them till he gave up. which I would agree sucks because of how many times they were replaced, but IMO it wasn't any diffrent then when vortech said you should just buy a new wet and dry side which prob cost a couple hundred.

This is probably the best thing said in this thread and absolutely true.

Sorry I just don't see how solving a problem and throwing crap product after crap product at the problem until it goes away is the same.

they didn't solve the problem with the vortech till he really complained then basically told him to buy a new one without the controller so how is that any diffrent?

I am not for or against either pump as I love my 9+ year old tunze's but when you pay 500 for a vortech pump and then when you have problems they tell you just to buy a new one, to me that isn't CS.

I know if I ever have problems with my tunze's that I will even get support with them on discounted parts or a new pump.

You are also only hearing one side to the story.

A month ago I bought a new MP60, I noticed the wetside was slipping down off the glass (3/4") with the proper spacer. I called EcoTech CS and they asked me to try the thin spacer and call them back the next day. I did and it did not solve the problem. They immediately shipped me a new, complete MP60 and paid for the return shipping of the first one, so I have never had that kind of bad CS from EcoTech.

And I never have had bad Customer Service from EcoTech in the many years I have dealt with them. I have had the occasional product issue, but it has always been dealt with quickly and very professionally.

I knew buying the jebaos that we would run into issues with having to replace them earlier than any ecotech/tunze power head.

The reason I even stuck with Jebao is that so far for initial cost of $120 (2 pumps) it may need a replacement every year. $40/replacement per year that is $240 for 3 years vs. $500-600 for 2 mp40s (average replacement is what, 3 years?)

It is still cheaper with what I've calculated, but a hassle. To me, it is worth it up to 2 replacements/year just because cost alone.
