Full Tank Progression Shots

Reefbum, you said you tried the 250w radium, but then switch back to the 400w radium? why is that? was the growth on the 250w not as good as the 400w?

I actually tried 250W 14k Giessman Megachromes. I liked the bulbs but they didn't give me the pop or the growth I am getting now with the 400W Radiums.

Absolutely Stunning!!!!!

Can you please share with us the rest of the tank. ie tank info, stand, filteration, your sump. What are you using for denitrification, skimmer, refuge?? I am very interested to see the equipment that is used to keep up with this beauty

Rob

I am in the market for a new ballast/reflector for 400w. do you have any recommendation? i am thinking of lumatek ballast and lumenbright reflector.

What a sweet tank!

The two angels are outstanding!

Really well done. I see a TOTM coming your way if your tank is still around in 2045 when they get back to giving the award out ;)

ReeBum- Awesome tank, its been my favorite since I first saw it on totm a few months ago. Did you QT the Regals Angel and Multibarred first or just put them into the display?

It would depend on the type of bulb you want to use. I love the Radiums on HQI ballasts but you can't find them anymore in the 400W version. I have heard good things about Lumateks.

Thanks! I did not QT any of the angels and I have never done it with any of my fish over the years. Knock on wood, but I have had some pretty good success with fish.

I've always thought that being the 14k is more of a full spectrum bulb it would give better growth?

Thanks

sweet progress reefbum and amazing tank.

Simply amazing! Your coral's growth and coloration puts a lot of very proud reefers to shame!

In your reefkeeping TOTM write up, you kind of glazed over your power back up, just saying that it was some marine deep cycle batteries. What exactly is the setup? A couple batteries in series with a power inverter/charger like the one made by Tripplite? Are they just powering the Tunzes? How much time do you have on backup power?

Thanks again!

I believe that is when I switched from 400W 10k bulbs on HQI ballasts plus 8 39W full spectrum T5s to 250W 14k bulbs on HQI ballasts and mixed in some actinic T5s. I eventually switched to the 400W Radiums since I love the colors and growth they produce. No worries about knocking me.....this is all personal preference. Some folks love 10ks while other are fans of 14k or 20ks. I personally felt the 10ks and even the 14ks to a degree had a bit too much white and yellow for my taste. The 20s really make things pop for me so that is what I like.

I should also mention that the photo progression makes the last 2 pictures look more blue since they are next to the photos with the whiter light. I don't think it looks as blue when you view the picture by itself or when you see it in person.

does the pink birdsnest look pink with the radiums? i'm not sure if it's because of the pic's or if it actually lost the pink colors due to the atinics? It does look alot more pink with the 14k's. right now i'm using 12.5k giesseman lamps and it's alittle too yellow for me and thinking of going to 14k's, however if you think the pinks are nice with the radium 20k.....then maybe... i don't know!

Reef bum,
Its really interesting to see how "full" the tank becomes over time with success. I'm in the middle of trying to aquascape my first "bigger" tank (90 Gallons) and I"m trying to decide how much rock to put in it. After looking at your picture I'm thinking about pulling some of the rock out ( I just set the tank up last week so now is a good time to juggle the aquascape) and wanted to know what you think. My build thread is here:

Many thanks again everybody!

Yes...but I ran 250W 14ks vs. 400W 20ks so the PAR was greater on the 20ks.

I think you may be confusing my tank with another one. I actually have a full house back up generator so I am able to sleep well at night :D

Yeah....certainly looks pink in person and I have always been a huge fan of the Radiums.

Wow! Great build thread. I'm lovin' that attention to detail. As for your rock, I think it looks pretty good to me....less is certainly better in my eyes so I think you have the right idea.

thanks for the info Reefbum! i will certainly get some 20k's on the next switch out. That was my biggest concern about losing the pin colors using 20k's

did you change your light bulb spectrum between october 2007 and december 2007 then again jan and may 2009? tanks look different. if you did can you tell me the light bulb combo and the ballast you are using that you started with and then changed to and which pic's as reference? not to knock you because the tank rocks, but i think the colors in the dec 2007 are nicer because the pinks are still pink and you still have the red spectrum. i also like the initial picture but it's a bit harder to tell because the corals are smaller.

thanks

Reefsahoy, Did you switch from t5's to MH?
