Full Tank Progression Shots

Props with everything you've done thus far. Spectacular looking tank and one of the nicest I've seen. In person it probably looks out of this world!!!

Since you're the saltwater guru...what's your take on led's? Worth trying or better to stick with the tried and true halides?

What dosing method do you think is the best for growth? Kalk, calcium reactor, or dosing pumps with 2 part. Is GFO and carbon necessary and isn't it true you can strip the water and make it too clean and thus in turn can lead to problematic issues.

Keith,
Looking forward to your newest TOTM (3rd.) tank project. Please keep on keeping us amazed with your progression shots.---Rick

I had to re-check the dates 3 times to be sure you ar removing corals lol  monday morning ... lol

cant wait to see your new beauty.

You have courage to do that!!!!

If you wanna save $ on electricity why dont you consider leds? It might be expensive at first but at the end, it can save you tons of $

Keith, when you sold me all those frags back in October I didn't realize you were totally cleaning house or is this something that you recently decided on? I'm glad I got to see it in person while it was still there. I'm sure the new build will end up looking just as beautiful (it just takes sooo much time to grow), but that's part of the fun I guess. Anyway, your frags (small colonies at this point) are doing great and I never lost a single one. If you ever want something back you can't find, shoot me a PM. GL with the new stuff, I'll be following along.

How long before there's a savings is a good question, some say it could take as long as 5 years +?

I'm in shock to see your tank starting over. I know it will look great again. I'm also curious how your growth will compare with the 250watt vs the old 400watt. I know with my 400 I def can notice a difference every few days with the coral now. Can't wait to see your tank grow up again.

Thanks...I too was in "shock" once I saw the tank minus the colonies :(

I am really looking forward to this lighting "experiment". Certain frags such as tri-colors never seemed to thrive so I am curious to see if too much light intensity had anything to do with it.

It's actually longer than 5 years. I calculated what I would save by replacing my halides and VHO's, electrical consumption and cost of bulb replacement until break-even point of LED system and its electrical consumption and it broke even at just under 7 years if I wanted to illuminate a 6 foot tank. The only LED system that seems promising is the Kessil A350's, but once again, a break even for my tank is almost 4 years away making the switch.

Justifying over $1,000 on a lighting technology switch when all I've seen are smallish frags beginning to grow or mini colonies in mixed reef tanks with LED is a stretch for me. When someone can show me a full grown, full blown SPS tank like Keith's that can grow SPS inches from the bottom I might consider. Oh yeah, some full tank shot progression shots like Reefbum's wouldn't hurt either. Until then, it's hard to argue with the successful Radium tanks this forum has seen over the years...Keith's of course being one of (if not the) best.

I have 400 watt Radiums on galaxy ballasts. After seeing what people like Mark Polletti have done with 250 watt Radiums it's not a stretch to assume Keith's going to have some amazing colors and growth. Lighting isn't everything, but I just don't know how to make the switch to LED's when Radiums and VHO actinics look so gooooooood.

I am going to be using Galaxy "select a watt" ballasts on the 250w HQI setting so I shall see. I am not ready to take that plunge on LEDs given the success I have had over the years with Radiums. As they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it :)

You're an animal! You really do define inspiration on every angle of reef keeping. It takes a ton of guts to do what you've done! I hope you made a pretty penny on some of those sweet colonies!!!!

I'm excited to see what you end up doing, as this tank is certainly one of my all time favorites!

Thanks man! I either have a lot of guts or I am an idiot....time will tell.

I will need a lot of convincing that LEDs can replace what halides can do...and that is just from my own experience. I know others have had success but personally I think the technology is still emerging. I thought about trying them but my cost to switch to 250s is so small that I wasn't ready to take the plunge with LEDs. I know you will save on electricity over the long haul but the key question is would I have kept the LEDs long enough to realize that savings.

I use Kalk, a calcium reactor, GFO and carbon. I feed my fish a lot, do large water changes and skim heavily. My nitrates and phosphates are at low levels and I believe keeping a slighty "dirty" tank is beneficial to the corals. High import/high export, that's my system.
