Full Tank Progression Shots

Keith, when you sold me all those frags back in October I didn't realize you were totally cleaning house or is this something that you recently decided on? I'm glad I got to see it in person while it was still there. I'm sure the new build will end up looking just as beautiful (it just takes sooo much time to grow), but that's part of the fun I guess. Anyway, your frags (small colonies at this point) are doing great and I never lost a single one. If you ever want something back you can't find, shoot me a PM. GL with the new stuff, I'll be following along.

Thanks! I didn't really know back then so this was more of a recent decision. You might be hearing from me soon on some frags ;) I saved a few but I am missing a piece or two.

Are you going to be keeping the monster Beckett skimmer? I had a hard time moving away from my large ETSS skimmer but once I saw what some of the more new designs could pull out of the water while saving a ton on electricity and no chiller required I was sold.

So I went ahead and sold off all of my colonies. Boy do things look quite bare :sad1: My fish are freaking out a bit but they will adapt.

WOW......

Well, you have inspired so many of us along the way. I looking forward to more of the same in the near future.

:)

The just put an Vertex Illumina 260 over my 90G. I am reluctantly optimistic, I have not sold my halides. There is plenty of light output and no heat....I look forward to the UV auxiliary modules to get that true actinic pop. I think the technology is there.

I will need a lot of convincing that LEDs can replace what halides can do...and that is just from my own experience. I know others have had success but personally I think the technology is still emerging. I thought about trying them but my cost to switch to 250s is so small that I wasn't ready to take the plunge with LEDs. I know you will save on electricity over the long haul but the key question is would I have kept the LEDs long enough to realize that savings.

I am keeping it at this point. Perhaps an upgrade is in order down the line.

Interested to see how it works out....keep us posted.

A friend of mine was running a DIY LED set up and his color and growth was incredible. He said it took a few months for his corals to adjust but once they did it was on. Also his electric bill dropped from around $300 a month down to about $65.

It's funny you mentioned the tri-colors. I also run 400 watt radiums and my tri color has grown, but I just can't get the color like I've seen in other tanks. I'll be following along on your progress and how yours does with the new lighting.

I use Kalk, a calcium reactor, GFO and carbon. I feed my fish a lot, do large water changes and skim heavily. My nitrates and phosphates are at low levels and I believe keeping a slighty "dirty" tank is beneficial to the corals. High import/high export, that's my system.

Cool reefbum, makes a lot of sense! What do you feed your fish and how often?

I'm really skeptical as to whether feeding corals does anything. Doesn't fish poop take care of that job! lol

For the fish I feed cubes of mysis, spirulina mysis and brine shrimp 1x per day. I also feed a variety of pellets 1x per day. For the corals I feed roti feast, oyster feast, cyclopeeze, and tropic marin pro coral zooton 1x per day.

Keith, I noticed that you're heavy on the GFO and carbon. Are you using aggressive high capacity GFO and ROX carbon or generic?

I've never been able to keep phosphates down when I started feeding corals directly, and was just wondering how you do it without polluting the tank.

Thanks

Reef bum, superb progression shots. I am doing the same. you have colonies of many things i am looking fo. you wouldnt want to sell me a frag pack by any change would you?

Maybe you should look at the previous page instead of the first one. It should answer your question for you.:lolspin:

Keith, do you feed your corals all those foods each time or do u mix it up?

I use bulk GFO and ESV carbon. I do have a bit of phosphate but I believe my large weekly water changes (15%) helps to keep this in check.

I am going to be using Galaxy "select a watt" ballasts on the 250w HQI setting so I shall see. I am not ready to take that plunge on LEDs given the success I have had over the years with Radiums. As they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it :)

Keith,

I have 9x400w mh over my 6x8x3ft. Currently running reeflux 10k, but did try all Radiums. I burnt my corals and don't know if it was too rapid a switch up or too many Radiums.

Do you reckon I could try a bulb change to 9x400w Radiums, or is that too much uv/ blue end?. Ie did you get any acclimation probs when changing bulbs?..

Thanks

Mo

What is the Par on the 10k bulbs you are using vs the Radiums? I haven't switched yet from 400s to 250s but I don't expect any problems since the Par will be lower. Right now I don't have any SPS in my main tank. All my frags are in my frag tank and under a 400w Radium and I plan to keep the 400w bulb over my frag tank permanently to promote quicker growth.

This tank is amazing and i can only hope to get to this point in reef keeping.
Really inspiring to see such a well kept tank.
