Functional Biology of Sea Anemones

This holy grail of anemone books has just shown up at a couple of book sellers - and it appears two copies are in "new" condition here in the U.S. This is a college text so it is not cheap; both copies are $120 or so - but that is a bargain considering I have seen this book listed for over $1000.

Let us know if you manage to pick up a copy!

Well, I got one. Let's hope the seller doesn't decide not to sell, like happened to me last time.

Looks like they must have reprinted it in paperback because the first seller has 10 copies. Makes me think we may have paid too much. :(

Looks like they are $69 at Barnes and Noble.

My wife ordered mine from BN.com -- 64 bucks with the membership discount. I'm excited since I've been looking for it for a while and couldn't shell out the money expected for the first print.

Thanks for letting us know!

BTW... unicorns do exist! At least that's what I choose to believe right now, that could change tomorrow.

I'm already pretty sure unicorns exist (maybe not this one). I'm just hoping Reefvette can give me a little support. :)

LOL... I completely understand. If it weren't for you, I would adamantly say that they don't exist. In this particular case, I think there are a lot of us who want it to be gigantea, but there are a lot of characteristics that lead us to believe otherwise.

Sorry, I didn't mean to drive this thread off course. My book has shipped and I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival.

The paperback version has a publication date of "4/30/2013" :) Either that date is wrong, your book hasn't shipping, or the simple action of ordering this book has created a time vortex that has shifted us one month into the future!!

is there a difference between the "therapy in practice series" (which is the expensive one) or the "functional biology series" (which is the cheaper one)?

They appear to be the same book. The cheaper on is simply a paperback version of the expensive version published in 1991.

This is the new publishers website. The information here leads me to believe that they are the exact same book on the inside and even have the same cover.

I have the "functional biology" one - but it was originally only available in hardcover (expensive). Apparently they have reprinted it in soft cover (less expensive). I have never head of the "therapy in practice" book.

I paid 76 (after tax) at BN.com for my book that is with membership. I did get express shipping and will get mine 1-3 business days. I maybe the first to get my copy :)

For what it's worth, I have spoken with the author on several occasions, and he never mentioned a different version of the same material. I am curious if he had the opportunity to revise / update any content? He told me that he felt much of the genetic content felt dated to him - since it was written, after all, in 1991.

I got my copy. This book certainly is not for light reading.

No definitely not. It is the definitive scientific work; the reference section is worth the price by itself but you have to work through the book slowly. The sections on bio chemistry and toxins were a little deep for me :)

I spoke to Dr Shick and he was not aware of the reprint. It is definitely not a revised edition; there is no new content. That said, it is still amazing in my opinion.

I feel like I'm back in college -- happy to be here but COMPLETELY confused. The book is very slow reading -- it's good bedtime reading. I either learn something or I fall asleep. Win-win in my book.
