Future FRAG and PROP Meeting Discussion

Definitely not a "must have" piece. Although the geek in me wanted to get my hands on one when they came out. I still have an ACIII that controls the my kids terrarium.

It always left a sour taste in my mouth when people boasted about there "cadillac" piece of equipment, when any DIY at a fraction of the cost would do the exact same thing. You don't have to look to far to see all these tank builds with brand new state of the art equipment and a few months later they're struggling to combat some catastrophic problem.

There are many ways to keep a reef tank. my first reef tank was built on a shoestring budget and it thrived.

Mitch, please don't let that get to you. You're going to come across people like that and for every one of those, there's 10 good ones.

I havent been to a meeting in years & have never paid dues so anything that I have to say here is probably irrelevent but here goes.
Yes, paying money is an issue for me. Meeting on Saturday is also an issue for me because my jobs almost always involve a weekend schedule.
connecting with people is also a problem. I dont usually see much here even though I consider this to be really the best & most easily avaiable resource on the internet. I joined the FB group a couple years ago & dont recall ever seeing a post show up in my feed. The few times I have visited there seems to be basically no activity. I have seen different attempts are FRAG website over the years. They have been consitently difficult to access & not worth the effort once I managed to access them. It always seems like nobody is there. Years ago, when I first learned about FRAG & not long after we set up our first large tank, FRAG was a very informal, non dues paying group of folks who got together once a month to basically drink some beer, exchange some frags & chat about tanks. It is my understanding that it was organized to fill a void that happened in the local reefing community after the death of Desert Marine Society. It seems to me that FRAG has attempted to go in the direction of creating something similar to what DMS once was but appaently there isnt really the enough community support to really pull that off.
I have met some very nice folks through FRAG & picked up frags from people that I would never see or couldnt afford at our LFS over the years. Its wonderful & I appreciate having the resources of our local community of reefers, however, I am a really busy person with many diverse interests. Reefing is a very very small part of that. I hope to have enough time & money to make it to a prop auction someday & I think that the concept of PROP itself is fantastic. PROP, however, is not for beginners or casual hobbiests such as myself
Because of the physical size of the Phoenix area, I think it is going to be really difficult to take an organization such as FRAG to the level that is being targeted. I know that I personally cannot afford to pay dues to FRAG on the off chance that I might be available to attend an occasional meeting.

Hi Chris. The last few meetings have been at this really cool place in Mesa called The Broken Yolk Cafe. (My wife and I own it.). I know FRAG leadership has been looking for a place on the West side, too, in order to keep both sides of the valley interested. I would imagine that Frick will be officially posting soon re: the next meeting/auction. I believe that it will be on 7/21, and last I heard would be at the Broken Yolk. The auctions are really cool, hope you can make it!

I think what would also help is if the leadership in the group was a little more active in these forums. It's basically the only place where the group's activities are discussed and where members can communicate with one another other than IRL at meetings.

Yeah, you're not wrong. I feel bad that I have't gotten as much time as I used to to post. I will try to work on that. Any outside help would be appreciated.

Maybe add a couple members to the board that are familiar with social media. Someone who can actively post about upcoming auctions/events. Someone who can actively administer the groups page on facebook and help spread the word about FRAG and PROP.
