FYI FW Dip Rhodactis

Don't dip rhodactis sp., I dipped my huge green frilly mushrooms 2 days back because they had flatworms. Since then they have been all shriveled up and excreting lots of waste. I think they are dying. I will post pics.

So when one says they want to "dip" their corals, they are just attempting to rid their coral of parasites? I see this term everywhere and I just haven't been 100% sure of the definition.

I gave a freshwater dip to my rhodactis sp. polyps just in case there were flatworms on the rock the mushrooms were on. Man, big mistake - they died a couple hours later

How do I know when they are dead for sure?

I would just leave them, they will often leave behind small amounts of tissue that will come back. Personally I only do a freshwater dip on Zoas, and only when I am being really careful - pretty sure they have something. Otherwise I do Iodine dips (Lugols), it is pretty much safe for everything, and most nasties will drop off.

when people say dip, usually they are referring to Iodine dips, and yes it is to get off parasites. There are quite a few nasty bugs out there that are near impossible to rid your tank of once they get in. So it really is best if you iodine dip your corals before adding them. Even better is to quarantine. It took me months to get rid of my monti eating nudis, and I am still not sure they are gone, and that was with dipping.

Try two little fishes ReVive. I dipped a few corals with that and everything died except the Coral. I have never seen so many dead organisms on the bottom of the bucket. Flatworms, Mini brittle stars,Astreas and a snail.
