G. Ternatensis Tank Build!

Great setup!!

I def vote for the 'shrooms over maxis. The maxis will get annoyed with being wandered over by Chucky lol.

Beware the small red knob on the Korallia Nanos...almost every one of mine has snapped off when manipulating the direction of the powerhead.

How does the Tunze go ?

I'm looking at getting a few in the near future basically same except 1 size up I think.

I hear great thinks about Tunze (specifically money worth) all round from there filters to there pumps/powerheads.

To me Deltec is the be all end all but the price isn't justifiable...can get 2 Tunze skimmers for the price of 1 Deltec and I cannot see a Deltec outperforming a Tunze twice over...

It's a little hard to tell just yet. I've only had it running a couple days and it really hasn't had a chance to break in. No foam yet. Although I don't know that the temporary tank would have all that much to skim in the first place. The only thing in there is the mantis, some live rock and a few majanos. It's humming away and making bubbles just fine, but nothing forming into foam yet. I'll probably have to give it a few more days at least before I start seeing some skimmate.

I did the air line modification to it, which seems to be working well. It is very easy to make fine adjustments.

These Tunze units are some of the higher rated nano skimmers, so I expect it will perform just fine once it's broken in.

Ok, I just pulled the trigger on 40 lbs of BRS Reefsavers dry rock. I think this will work out well. I'm planning to cycle the tank with ammonia and will jump start the cycle with some live rock.

I'll be using the carib-sea aragonite substrate.

Yeah, it may even be too much, but any leftover will get used eventually for some sort of nano or pico tank. I may also add some more to my 10 gallon.

The BRS Reefsaver rock had excellent reviews, and in particular people praised it's porosity and ease of aquascaping. I don't want this to be just a big pile of rocks. I probably won't be adding any discosoma mushrooms for a month or two after it's cycled. I'm going to try to get some larger ones. I know a lot of people locally who have nice blue, green, purple and red ones that they curse for their rapid growth. No problem for me since that's all I'm using and they shouldn't sting each other.

Update on the Tunze 9002...

This evening, I came home and the skimmer was starting to produce some dry foam. So, it's starting to work already.

I made about 10 gallons of RO/DI water tonight, so the tank is almost half full now.

First bucket of water...

Anybody have any thoughts about what I should do with the fairly large rear chamber where the bio-balls used to be on this tank?

I could put some chunks of live rock back there, I suppose. I don't think I'm going to put chaeto in this tank. It just seems like it would be a hassle to keep it from getting into the pump. So far, the only thing back there will be the bags of chemipure and purigen. Are there any alternatives to bio-balls that work well? I'm thinking I'll probably just put a couple of large-ish chunks of live rock. The chamber is after the filter pad, so it shouldn't build up much detritus.

LR isn't a bad idea. I would use some larger chinks so they're easier to pull out when you periodically clean all the detritus from that compartment.

Hey dose that chamber hold water or dose water trickle through it? I just got a nasty idea. If the water trickles through it I would add a top off unit to maintain the water level for the return, then I would cut a pice of acrylic cut to fit over that section. With this acrylic sheet I would cut a line down the middle that I would hang a sheet of needle point plastic through. This would allow the water to run down the sheet, add a light from behind the tank (i like the JBJ fuge light for this) and Voila you got yourself an algae scrubber! Simple to maintain and as you said no problem keeping back cheto. If you think cheto is good at keeping the tanks chemistry in check wait till you let hair algae do its thing. Being a mantis tank you'll like its ability to pull waste.

You'll need the ATO so you can maintain the water below where you want the HA to grow.

Darn scrolled back and see that the back of the tank is blue. So use submersible lights on both sides of the scrubber.

I know this is far fetched, but consider it you'd be the one guy out there with an AIO tank thats filter is run by a Algae Scrubber. I like when mantis guys build stuff into uncharted territory.

Oh man, don't even tempt me. I'll have to play around with it a little. I could probably make it work. The trick would be setting up an ATO to maintain the filter compartment water level.

As it is right now, the water goes into the first chamber which houses the skimmer and stays at a constant level. The second chamber has a tray with holes drilled in it at the top where the filter pad goes. If the water level in the second chamber were to get low enough, it would trickle down through. If the water level could be maintained with some sort of ATO, you could totally build an algae scrubber into the back.

That's something to consider for the future. I'll see what it does when I get the tank filled mostly filled and drop the water level in the 2nd chamber with the filter pad installed.

A few goodies from Marine Depot...

Black hose for the chiller and some plastic hose clamps. Chemipure Elite and Purigen for after it cycles and pair of extra long handled forceps for feeding, etc.

Rock and sand coming from BRS in a couple days.

Making more water tonight. Should be close to full by the end of the evening. Then in goes salt!
