Gateway Aquatic

i liked the tanks along the wall, but i didn't really like how the little ones were so situated deep.

were those quaranteen tanks agains the back wall?

the staff was very nice and helpful. :)

what about their prices!? i thought that they were really good! unlike other places that charge you $40 for 50 brown zoos !

the staff was so so......

-- Chad didnt know the names of anyting there =( (he called the RBTA's "red stingers")

-- And steve didnt know what live rock was! let alone zooanthids (he called the lr "stinky boulders")

i guess because they dont know what they are selling is why the prices are soo good

and i saw way to many common corals with rare names for high prices! (but on average most prices were great)

I was in there on Saturday and I personally like the layout. Clear labels on prices and distinct sections was really nice. The little tanks along the back might defer customers, but I understand the placement. Overall I think its a nice store, and I plan to shop there as I develop out of 3 tanks.
The prices were very fair too, and I heard a killer deal on salt. For the stores I have been to in the Midwest, this ranks among the nicer stores intuned to the customer.
I hope it stays nice in the future and good luck.

from the stores that i have visited, it would rank number 1......... o wait, i only shop at one store

GWA!

Fish I would like to see.
Rabbit's, wrasse's, angels's, butterfly's, clowns other than orange perc's.
I would like to see more uncomon fish in these catagories. If you have been to one St.louis LFS then you have been to them all but chad's is clean and everything the others are not.

I would like to see more SPS :D

he has been open for 2 weeks give he a chance to rebound!

i would like to see some nice wrasses too! and a sweet rabbit

i would also like to say that there are LFS's, then there is GWA. category of its own.

A few more suggestions:
I really like how all the corals were clearly priced. The little specimens tanks desperately need some pricing though.

Something that would be really cool would be information cards about the corals and fish: A laminated page with a picture, common name and scientific name along with a short discription about care (water flow, lighting, diet for fish, difficulty). That way someone browsing can read a little about what they want and see if it is right for them. I personally don't like to ask questions and that would be great for people like me.

You need a nice display tank. While the frag tanks work very well, I love the look of a full display tank; that's part of the reason I love going to stores to get ideas with what I can do with my tank. That and seeing something so spetacular is what got me into the hoby to begin with, a good way to get new people who just stop by to browse. And you can still sell the stuff out of it too.

If someone stopped by and said they wanted to set up a complete tank, could you sell them everything they need on the spot? That's what my dad's friend just did.

The invert tanks do have prices, they are listed to the right side at the start of the whole system, inside of a framed print out.

Mykayel - that is a really good idea about the information cards! I do the research before I go to the store, but it might help my spur of the moment purchases!

i havent been in since it opened, but a decent selection of dry goods on hand would be good if its possible to do with reasonable pricing. for example, almost everyone agrees that asm skimmers are great, but where can you buy one locally? same thing with tunzes, calcium reactors, lighting equipment, etc. not saying to have 10 bubble kings sitting on the shelf, but it would nice to be able to walk into a store and buy equipment rather than dealing with shipping and all the troubles that can go with it. maybe a consignment section for used goods too?

i agree, but it wouldnt have to be anything other than a shelf on the wall, or a sign advertising something larger in the back

The fish systems light did not work out for us, so we are getting new ones and they should be installed soon, so thats why its so dim in there.

As far as selling tanks and such,
It's hard to sell equipment like that because people always change what they want and just because we got a tank in does not mean they want the stand. So what do you do with the extra stand ? We will have lighting systems in, and other "big" items, and the standard stuff. It takes time to accumulate dry goods.

There is no store in MO, that can sell you a complete set up at one time. There will be a piece of it that is flawed to the point where your system will suffer.
I think you should piece your system together and get what works insted of buying a lumped together LFS system.

I love your requirement/husbandry info ideas for the inverts and livestock.
