There will be two Tomini-less guys on this forum very soon !
What fish do you want to see John ?

Actually they are coming in soon, cross your fingers.

About the information cards.......

Instead of taking all that time to make information cards, the store just needs a quick reference guide book for customers to use. I know CPE and Beldt's have them. It's much easier that way. There's hundreds of fish. Could you imagine having to print up a new information card for every fish that is put in? Besides, with a book you can compare that fish to fish that aren't there yet.

Just my idea to save time and money while still giving out detailed information.

i can get one from petopia

There is a really cool little cardinal in the front tank that reminds me of a neon tetra but for saltwater. Did anyone notice that one? A little school of those could even go in a nano tank. Very cool looking.

Info cards: I would say index card quick info @ the tank, but at the register, have the system print out a detailed sheet - like the pharmasists do. - would totally be willing to do some programming for store credit :) (though you would probably want to get some one else to do the data entry)

Remember, the more you get in return for a purchase the more your purchase will cost you.

Example for anybody wanting to learn...maybe trottie

You buy a fish for $20.

The fish cost the store $5 and spends 25 cents checking you out - paper, employee wages, you pay with credit card (gotta pay fee to visa/mc), extra paper for the info, ink for printer.

Before getting the extra infor say it only cost the store 20 cents to check you out. That's 5 cents

You may say that's only 5 cents, but if you do hundreds/thousands over time, of purchases like that it adds up.

All in all, to get more eventually you'll have to pay more.

Sorry if this is elementary to some people, but I just like to try and educate sometimes.

I like the info idea on everything as well. Corals too though, not just fish. It might help someone from making a bad decision and getting GWA a very undeserved bad rep.

People take stuff home and often do not understand the husbandry requirements.

Doing a card for each type of fish won't be so difficult either. Cover them in something making them rigid and waterproof. Before you know it, they have them all made in a card file.

I agree that it would be educational and informative, but I guess I just see it as becoming possibly confrontational. If somebody else reads it and goes home and meets all requirements on that card they'll blame GWA for giving inaccurate information.

On the other hand, if they read it in a published book they probably won't be blaming the LFS.

Just an Idea, But how about just buying a few ( like 5 or 8 ) of Scott W. Michaels pocket book MARINE FISHES and the same of RONALD L. SHIMKEK, Ph.D. MARINE INVERTEBRATES pocket book?? There very full of pitures as well as the husbendry of most if not all the creatures you'll see in home aquariums. Have them out for costumers to view for referance to a fish, invert or coral and some costumers might want to purchase the pocket book too.
It worked on me, I went to the LSF seen something I really wanted but knew nothing about it then seen the pocket books and bought them instead of the fish, went home, read the 2 books, and then went back and bought what I knew I could have with the system I had.

Did anyone notice that Chad tries to stock books or has one on the counter that you can walk over and utilize for reference or research. CPE has had one for years at the front counter.

The informational cards don't sound like a bad idea but take up space. All you need to see is the name maybe go a step further scientific name and price.

Sorry I was typing, That wasn't there when I started, I seen it after I click submit. Me thinks you stole it from mind thoughts as I started to types it. :eek1:

We are in the electronic age.... Heck, I even hear people want electronic voting for hobby club elections....

MY QUESTION:
Why doesn't a LFS have a simple computer terminal and keyboard that is set-up somewhere in the store to only access certain informative aquarium sites. Restricting all other sites not related to the business.

EXAMPLE 1:
I go to a LFS, see a really cool fish. Walk over to the terminal, look up the fish, read all about it and make a decision. Data in books and on cards can become outdated alittle quicker then the internet.

EXAMPLE 2:
Customer walks in and really wants some new lights. Salesman tried to explain a solution, but customer really cant grasp the idea. It would be very nice to pop onto a site and show the customer what is available. Salesman can either tell the customer that the LFS could order it for them, or just show the online site to get it. Either way, very satisfied customer that would most probably come back for more business.

maybe you could leave your palm pilot, john and chad can use that for the internet for the customer to luck up information
