Gauging Interest: Deltec AP702

Hi everyone,

I have a Deltec 702 skimmer that is just too big for my current setup (~150 gallons total). I am thinking about possibly selling it and getting a smaller skimmer. I had originally intended it for a larger system, but when I settled with a 125 gallon + 30 gallon sump I realized that it was really too big. It was purchased directly from Deltec USA a little more than two years ago. It's been used on and off for the past two years, as I've been gradually building up my 125. Due to the rising euro, a new one sells for $1,851 + tax/shipping, but when I bought it I paid about $1700. I'd like to get ~$1300, but am willing to negotiate. Anyone interested?

here's a more recent one from a couple months ago, i covered the body with paper bags and painted them black to prevent algae from growing inside, the bags have since been removed:

Deltec rates it at 400 gallons for a heavily stocked tank, 530 gallons for normally stocked tanks. In my experience, I have seen it on tanks ranging from 180 gallons all the way up to the upper limits at ~600 gallons. In my honest opinion it is way to big for anything under 150 to 180 gallons.

The pumps are eheim pumps. They are good pumps, but the replacement pumps from deltec cost a lot of money because they modify them (last time i checked, around 500 a piece). Fortunately, the eheims have a reputation for lasting long and such. In the time that i've had it, i've had no problems with the pumps.

The pumps themselves are not very loud, however, the air hoses for the venturis make a hissing noise which is actually quite annoying. the way i got around this was to attach extra air line to the hose. also, if you do not keep the air path clean, the pump wont be able to suck in enough air and the needlewheel will make a grinding sound, which is pretty audible (you get the same effect by plugging up the airline). honestly, i'd only consider putting this in a living room if you had it under a stand or something to filter out some of the noise.

when inside the stand, do you hear the hissing? and do the pumps make a lot of sound?

my sedra 9k's not only makes air sound, but the pumps themselves are really loud.

hi,

the hissing noise can be reduced to nearly zero if you extend the airline with some extra tubing (the plastic ones used for air pumps or RODI units work just fine), its hard to see, but thats what i did in the picture above

i didnt have any room under the stand to put the skimmer, so i ended up putting it behind the tank. that really helped a lot. the pumps themselves aren't that loud, but when everything is turned on, the whole skimmer makes a low resonance or hum. i hope that makes sense, it's really hard to describe.

oh, btw, this is a big skimmer. it's footprint is roughly 20"x20" and its 24" tall. and you need quite a bit of room around it to clean it and such.

Hi Ted,

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the ceramic impeller shaft? As for the little black rubber bushings, they've been fine since the day I got them.

i am surprised to see it come up for sale. on a sps reef with fish i would say it is a good match for your tank. i have a 180g and my skimmer is rated for 500+gallons....

good luck with the sale.... what skimmer were you gonna look at next.....

too bad i upgraded a few months ago. i am in camarillo, i would - a snagged it!
