Gem tang for $1100. To do or not to do...?

Their was a thread here on Reef Central where people listed the cost per gallon in their setups.

I'm post #27 on there...

I came up with $16/gal on my 210 gal. I wasn't the lowest so it can be done cheaper than I did it still.

I'm sure that people can do it 'on the cheap'...but the average is much higher...
I have 80 fish... IF they averaged ONLY $50 each, that's $4Gs right there...and many of them are not $50!

With over 40 yrs in the hobby, I'd say easy 6 figures is where I'm at...especially when you include everything, like mods to the house and backup generators and etc, etc, etc.

That's in 1 tank, my 450g DT...I have another 130g tank with ~20 fish at my grandsons home, that I'm upgrading to a 300g in a month or 2.

I always try to find a deal, rig something up or trade. So I've kept my costs lower. But fish, that's another story.

My lights are all Chinese led, 2 reef octopus skimmers instead of 1 larger, more expensive one. Jebao powerheads. Used eheim return, etc.

You do anything for long enough and the 'lifetime' cost becomes significant. Buddy of mine once estimated how much he had spent on beer in his lifetime and it was well into 5 figures. I have kept track of all my stereo/HT purchases since I started in the hobby as a teenager and the total not adjusted for inflation is staggering (think college tuition). Don't think my aquarium hobby is as bad, but it's sizable also.

My fiancée just bought some nikon on thanksgiving. Def not the greatest, but for $100 normally $350, figured might as well try it out.

I learned a long time ago, spend a little more for the better equipment... lol to many melted powerheads, pumps that just stop working, lights that dont work or only last 6 months etc. IME/IMO its worth the extra $$ for the top shelf stuff.

Fish - you just have to know the right people
