Gem tang

Not really a biggest fan of tang except Achilles and powder blue but everyone I know go bananas over them. How do you guys feel about it ?

Are you considering getting one Lawrence? My advice is to buy it if you like it and not what others think of it, especially considering the price. I personally love them. I think of them as the hipsters of the tang world. I find it very ironic that they wear tiny white spots all over their black body considering the propensity of how tangs are ich magnets.

Gem tang is one of those ...

its a beautiful fish ... and would get alot of attention from Reefers that visit ... but not so much from ordinary observers. so make sure YOU like it.

Wayne and others that own one ... how are they compared to other tangs ? in terms of disease attraction, eating, temper and so on ? among "rare" fish I think gem tang would be considered more "easy to keep" ?

From everything I've heard they are easier and hardier but many have a bad temper. Mine is like almost 2 inches tip to tail, but eats pellets, mysis, nori, and a small ball of chaeto. The tank he is going into have some more aggressive fish and my zebra is similar in size. I think getting them both so young will keep down flare ups.

wow 2 inch is amazing ! hide it away from Wayne and Ted :P haha

glad he is eating and hope the introduction goes well :)

Ted's grinch heart must have grown 3 sizes because he helped me finalize the deal at like midnight the day it went up. Wayne stole the baby from Kevin at PIA so I think he is temporarily satiated.

I am a fan- I just had a OP to get one at cost + a ping pong table - so I pulled the trigger - my little guy in his t t tanks waiting to get thru my qt process

Are you the one that ordered the Gem Tang from Custom Reef Creation? Saw it on the OK REEF COMMUNITY

I actually have two gems. I ordered the small one from PIA a while ago and I had the opportunity to pick up a baby locally recently too. The PIA one was about 2.25" and my baby was under two. Here's a video of my baby gem w my baby black tang that I bought from PIA recently too( you really have to look for the black because of the black back):

The gem was definitely the dominant one when I put them together but I think it was because it was slightly larger. As for temperament, I would say they're as mean as purples but they definitely hold they're own. I'll be sticking my other gem in the tank soon as it's done qt. It's slightly larger than the baby gem and black so I'm hoping they'll all get along harmoniously.

there are few small ones today 2" maybe less. The fish crazy group are very happy I will wait for 4" next week or so..
need to start moving the fish out of QT SOON.

Wayne amazing collection

I am a big fan of the gem tang. I agree that to the casual observer they may not get that initial attention, but with all of the flashy reds, yellows, blues and purples in my tank a gem will actually stand out. A gem has been on my list for a long time and today I finally picked one up -- a small, not tiny, 2.5 incher. He is in Qt with a 3.5" regal and is already the boss. Very robust fish.

Congrats to all you folks who just got gems! Love the pictures and video, that baby gem is sweet Wayne!

Welcome to fish crazy group sir

I like them. They look pretty good, and at least they're hardy.

In Europe they're about the same price as a black. They're partly pricey as there aren't a lot of other fish from Mauritius to add as filler and dilute the transport/overhead costs

Nice! Hope you show it off soon, along with a FTS :spin3:

I myself opt for a Purple tang instead, that way if it dies, I won't have to sell the tank to break even

wow they look amazing I thought I saw them in your video before but never looked this close :) congrats. cant wait to see them in your DT.

Saw one at a local shop. Seen wholesale listings ranging in ~1000$ differences between three places. From around 5-600 up to recently 1600$ for a small. They keep posting last ones for the year and keep lowering the prices. Epic gouge if you ask me. Cause places keep getting more. I got caught in the hype of wanting one until seeing one in person. You would think after the high wholesale prices. Then stores crazy markups. (1600$ up to 3-4000$, really?)... I thought the white spots would sparkle at least. lol For the markup I've seen. You shouldn't have to quarenteen it. The store should give a clean health bill, from a vet. Kinda the same as inbred ugly white clowns going for hundreds of dollars+ Hopefully those white spots start to glow, once they get healthier. At minimal I guess you could say you have a chance of owning a fish, that has white spots and no parasites. I am just thinking its a hype fish. Something that's not fancy. Jack up the prices online. Not many of them have been seen in person. The high price makes you want it... I think 1600-4000$ on a sweet controller, lighting and dosing filtration system. Would be a better impression online. just an opinion having seen one in person.
