General Opinion on Lee Mar?

Thinking about purchasing a custom 150 Lee Mar, just wondering what the consensus was on them as a mfr. I know they're SoCal based and I hear most people are happy, but just wanted to put this out there and see.

Yea, I got a quote for one with the Starphire glass a little while back, so I'm prepared for the expense; I just want to know its worth it ;)

Where about Irvine are you? I'll be looking for a place down there in a few months, any suggestions on where to look? (apts, not houses)

Yeh, we were originally going to go with Leemar, however, my gf wanted a canopy anyways so it didn't really make a difference for us to go eurobracing or regular bracing so we went with advance aqua tanks instead. I think its definitely worth it. They always look extremely well put together and no sloppy silicone or anything. Very clean. I live in the woodbridge area. Villa Sienna is an extremely nice apt complex if money isn't too big of a factor.

Lar's, like any tank manufacturer, you can find good and bad if you look hard enough! About the only way to really tell the difference between tank manufacturers is if you could place a few tanks side by side and really look at what matters to you. You'll see what you like and what you don't like.

Personally, I like my Lee Mar tank :D

I'm with Ken on this. I really like my Lee Mar tank...Make sure you know what your getting. The brand name "Starphire" gets thrown around a lot by people who have tanks with low iron glass that's not Starphire.

FWIW, I bought euro bracing so I didn't have to deal with the cross bar shading out the light.

Oh yea, Ken I forgot yours was a Lee Mar! That one was pretty nice, I remember.

I've been told by several people that the EuroBrace on glass tanks is purely aesthetic, but I'll prob get it anyways, just for the convience of having somewhere to set things as I'm messing with the occupants... :p

You just made me have a flashback. LeeMar makes nice tanks hands down. I can't dispute that. What I can dispute is having a high end 180 spilt a seam on the front panel and flood the house, causing 10K plus in damage, loosing 90% of sps and equipment with no compensation. The tank was not even 2 years old and sat in the same place since its purchase.

I heard every excuse from them from poorly set up to the stand warping. Not the case. They finally repaired the tank and that was it. Nice job fixing it though. I ended up selling the whole system, stand and all and I know the buyer is happy and has not had an issue. Knock on wood.

The major warranty problem from them was I did not buy a stand from them. I had to go through my insurance co for the damage and it was a PITA. I never got an explanation why the panel split. There was no glass breakage.

I still have another LeeMar, but on my new 450 system, I am buying elsewhere.

Just my 10K plus of advice

Tony

I guess lighting can be seen as "purely aesthetic";)

I have heard this time and again.

Does anyone warranty their tanks anymore when you do not buy the stand from the company as well?

Tony

dang it tony,

you're making nervous!!!

no, seriously...i am very happy with the repair leemar did. one could never tell if it was repaired.

i have seen other larger tanks by other makers with 'starphire' fronts and sides and they pale in comparison.

if i were to get another glass tank...leemar would be it, no question.

I was waiting for you to chime in Ben!!!!

Like I always said, its a nice tank and good quality.

I am just one of those guys, if you stick your finger in a socket and get shocked, learn from it and don't do it again!!!

i purchased my lee mar 180 about 6 months ago

its black back center overflow internally plummed with clear view flat polished low iron glass and perimiter euro bracing

6x2x2 dimensions

im really happy with the quality and the price... before getting holes drilled or taxes i got it at my lfs for $1200

i had a few issues the first one was they chipped a panel while delivering it... 2 weeks later sent a new one...

then they drilled my CL holes in the wrong areas and they didnt wanna cover it so they had to replace the back panel

so basically my tank was 5 weeks late lol

but all in all a very very nice tank!!!!

Bought mine thru Jeff's January of 2005 with front Starphire panel and eurobracing. Real happy with it, but it definitely is a lot pricier...I think I have pics of the tank in my gallery

i got it out here in simi valley off of tapo canyon and cochran st its called simi tropical fish....

small lil older store but very nice people ive known them for years....

if ur interested let me know and ill go talk to them...

with tax and my 8 holes drilled it was about $1400 though JFYI

awesome tank thought crystal clear and well made... id deffinately recommend getting the flat polsihed glass though which is what this has

Justin,

flat polished glass??

so it was $1400 custom starphire (3 sides?) drilled/overflow/eurobrace?

Tony,
Was it eurobraced by any chance?

I dont know if anyone's seen this (I know Ken has--DaveB's tank has this) but L-beam brace around the top? I dont know where Dave got it/had it done, but it would be some piece of mind...

I'm happy with mine. It is also flat polish glass. The most common question regarding the tank is, "Is that starphire?" My answer, "Yes it is." But now since this post the cat's out of the bag. Personally I think starphire is a waste for glass that is 1/2" thick or less. I would recommend saving the money and add it to the skimmer fund. You will get much better use of you money that way.
